van fridges

We haver spoken to several people who travel with their van fridges connected to gas - running - surely this is a recipe for disaster?
All the manuals tell you not to do it - so why do they?

Isnt it actually illegal.

Imagine filling up with petrol at a servo with your gas on
The fridge should be on 12 volt or of as the pilot flame would be enough to sart a fire.
Even with the hot water turned on is disatrous as the igniter could start up and boom

Headlines in the news and a costly funeral.

Some dont Know.

Some dont care and some are bloodyminded enough to do it cos you shouldnt.

Cant believe some of the things i have seen on this trip.

Graham H

In WA we have Jiffy Van (muck trucks) that drive around all day with a gas driven oven to keep there food worm.

I know it's not a van fridge but it is still a gas appliance running while driving.

Regards

Richard

Same goes for bitumen trucks

Hmmmm must say WA is different cross the border and turn clocks back 20years.

Sunday shopping??????/ Ever heard of it

In NZ they sell more cars on a Sunday than any other day of the week.'

Still hasnt caught on here even on the East Coast.

Hope Im not filling up when any of them decide to pull into the same servo.

Cheers in wet and windy Geraldton That is closed for the day today.

Hi Julie
If the van fridge also runs on 12 volt you can get a Fridge Switch which is a motion switch and turns the fridge on/off if vehicle is stationary or moving.
These are great if the towing vehicle is already set up for charging the van battery via Anderson plugs etc. The unit is put in the 12 volt line to the fridge

Jules,

I actually got away with doing this for years....luckily. I was not aware of the potential dangers and never made aware for years. Can't count the number of times I have fuelled up with the gas fridge running. All I can say is how lucky are we?

Now this would be impossible to do on my setup as it is purely 12/240V fridge. I now have the other problem of forgetting to turn the gas bottle on before trying to light the gas stove. The gas bottle is turned off at the bottle before we move on each time, hopefully preventing potential dangers.

Cheers, Trevor.

The manual for the Avan says to make sure you turn off the gas before entering a servo, all the vans that I have seen in Europe travel with the gas on. I have travelled with it on but usually use 12 volt supply.
I have seen a van explode on the Esplanade in Hervey Bay scorching the awning of the Westpac Bank and destroying van and car.
I was told that they were traveling with cylinder stored inside the van, and the explosion seemed to be opposite the fridge.
