Well, John may be a bit rough, but then he's onto something important - you have to do your research properly, which is what you are doing by posting on EO. You can't refuel at Purnie
Bore,so your calculations have to be from
Oodnadatta or Mount Dare, not Purnie.
I was told, as a rule of thumb, to allow enough fuel to get to the clay pans about 400 km to the East of Purnie, and then back to
Oodnadatta or Mount Dare, in case of flooding and closure. That equates to a round trip of around 800km at about 50% more fuel per 100km than you would use on the bitumen. But don't quote me!!
I have done Mount Dare to
Birdsville 3 times on 160 litres per trip in a 3.4l manual petrol Prado, but with no dramas, just straight driving with no hold ups. I have carried 60l of spare fuel each time, and in theory could have managed without this reserve (but I wouldn't dare try it!). But you will do your own calculations.
