I think your looking for the "Rig" Road.

Have a look at the Trek Notes on this site.

Maybe look at a map............ then don't go. If you need to ask the distance between two places and you don't know the name of the road you will be using, you need more experience before venturing out in the Simpson.

Harsh, yes, but then so is the Simpson...........

Well, John may be a bit rough, but then he's onto something important - you have to do your research properly, which is what you are doing by posting on EO. You can't refuel at Purnie Bore,so your calculations have to be from Oodnadatta or Mount Dare, not Purnie.
I was told, as a rule of thumb, to allow enough fuel to get to the clay pans about 400 km to the East of Purnie, and then back to Oodnadatta or Mount Dare, in case of flooding and closure. That equates to a round trip of around 800km at about 50% more fuel per 100km than you would use on the bitumen. But don't quote me!!
I have done Mount Dare to Birdsville 3 times on 160 litres per trip in a 3.4l manual petrol Prado, but with no dramas, just straight driving with no hold ups. I have carried 60l of spare fuel each time, and in theory could have managed without this reserve (but I wouldn't dare try it!). But you will do your own calculations.

Yeh, ta Tenpounder, My spelling is no good at the best of times however i rather hear peoples personal experience when getting info.

John, to be honest after my years of touring around OZ, maps mmmm only tell you BUGGER ALL about the roads asspecialy when trek notes have not been taken............. ide rather get feedback from people who have done it! You would not agree??. I was told of its name and hadn't had a chance to look it up.....(why i got it wrong), yes rushing but i had to get my entry form in ASAP.

Im heading out there to ride a mountain bike across it in a race. Oh and the road isn't that harsh from the sections i know, its just i hadn't done the "rig" rd the whole way..

Cheers for the links guys.... i couldnt find it, only treks that had done sections of it and rejoined on others....thats great!

So you are going to ride in the Simpson Desert Classic then - in late September. Hope you know how hot it is and you have a good back-up crew with plenty of water and electrolytes!

Well, howd'ya'be, Troyza. I am an official in the very same Simpson Desert Bike Classic - that's why I've done it a few times!!
Please ask me as many questions as you like over the next few weeks, and I'll be really happy to give you the feedback as best I can.
You can email me if you like.
Ruth is about right (she should know, after all, she is the resident expert). It can be a tad warm at that time of year. And the dunes can be a bit soft in places.
But, if you are riding, mate, then there are other things to be thinking about, in terms of your own challenges.
It is a fabulous event, and I'd love to help you to participate and enjoy (bull bleep - survive) the event for yourself.
Julie and I will see you at Purnie

don,t take any notice of the small minded comment from some members troyzer.sift through the crap responses and you will pick up some good info on this site.you should have a reliable 4wd but you must do a check on what fuel your car uses.i have a d40 navara that gets 15.5ltper 100kl and my mate has got an older d40 that gets 10.5. do your check on sand not tar.great place to go and you only need to have an average understanding of 4wd to cross safly.

Hi. I tried to include my email before, but somehow it got stripped out of my reply. We are xxx p147chris@bigpond.com xxx . Of course, you know that the organisers are also very much on call to help with info (as per the website). If you tell me or them your vehicle description, then I suspect we'll be able to help with fuel stats etc. (no, we won't have the fuel consumption for a Morris Minor).
You are totally welcome to fire your questions at us, and I also encourage you to use the official site for info.
Welcome to the club!

I was trying to talk a friend into this on the weekend, he can ride and I will drive.
If warburton crossing is still closed what will the route be this year.
From memory you guys come out this way and head up the BV track?
Might even try it myself one year.

Hi. I suggest you visit http://www.desertchallenge.org/ and have a look for yourself at the details. As I understand it, as of now, the Inside Track may be still closed by race time, but Warburton Crossing is expected to be open by then. Clearly, any update will be reported on the SDBC site http://www.desertchallenge.org/, so we'll all have to watch that.
So, yes, we expect to come out at the junction between the Warburton Track and the Birdsville Track, and either continue on the B'ville Track or take the Inner Track if it open by then.
By the way, I am not an official spokesman for the SDBC, just a willing supporter and fan.
Dean, I reckon you show considerable intellectual promise in deciding your friend can ride, leaving you with the job of driving. Mind you, the drivers can expect a bit of fun this year, by all accounts.
