Just doing a last minute fine tune of some fuel calcs - anyone give me any idea of fuel economy between Birdsville and (say) Poeppels Corner for a LC105 4.5 petrol?

I am calculating 24 litres/100 km for the dunes and about 18 litres/100 km for track work.

Any takers?

Hi Viz,
We crossed the Simpson in 2000 with our 80 series petrol 4.5 landcruiser so should be similar to you.
We had 2 adults and 3 kids and gear so did have some stuff although not overloaded. (we were only allowed a small backpack of clothes each).
We did a variety of tracks, all up 670 kms from Birdsville to Mt Dare and used 170 litres. We would have had to have taken a lot more fuel if going on to Oodnadatta.
We took 50 litres of fuel in jerries and at each pit stop (lunch etc) we topped up the main tanks. So we emptied the jerrycans pretty quickly. I think you already have a bigger fuel tank than the 80 series. 180 litres?
A good tip is to get on the dunes as early as possible. We tried to get going around 7 each day as the dunes heat up and this takes a toll on fuel consumption too.
So to cut a long story short (sorry), got a bit carried away there we calculated we used approx 25 litres /100 kms. That's dunes and tracks. Have a great time.
Cheers, Sally.

G'day viz

My 4.8 Patrol averaged 25lts/100km across the desert last year.

The 4.5 cruisers are very close to the consumption figures of the 4.8 If not a bit better.

Cheers

Thanks guys - I think I am in the ball park with my calcs.

I have got 145 total fuel, plus two jerries makes 185 litres. How much of that is usable I don't know...

This should get me to Cameron Corner from Birdsville via Peoppels Corner with some to spare, though worst case scenario I might only have 40 litres left by the time I arrive...

Hi Viz,
Is this a typo? Cameron's Corner then Birdsville then Poeppels Corner. Bit worried about the track you are taking.
Cheers Sally

Viz,
Sounds like you are wanting to take the K1 Line from Poeppels Cnr to the Birdsville Track and then Walkers Crossing track.
As far as I know, th K1 Line is still closed at Warburton Crossing.

I had heard that it was open - however I will be checking at Birdsville when I get there. Inside track is closed too I understand.

All battle plans are subject to change within the first five minutes - if Warburton is closed, then I may do a loop around the Rig Road back to BDV. Not too worried :)
