What a fantastic picture, I have one from the front gate of the burketown caravan park that I felt was a good snap of cloud formation BUT yours is a ripper.
Thanks for sharing

Great picture - In the ten years I lived in the gulf they always amazed me to look at. The wind in very strong as they approach and they are quite fun to drive under on the Kurumba Plains. Cheers Tony

Hi Frogman

Great pic, I saw it in wikipaedia the other day after reading an article in Outback magazine (aug 2008), and then doing a little Google search on the subject.

If anyone wants to see the "full size" picture of this, follow the link.

wow, thats what it is.
i saw something like this on the way up from CAN-BRIS on the plane. a lot closer together and not as clear as that and had some underlying cloud beneath it, but i said to my self 'never seen that before'.

fantastic pic, just makes you realise the magical things you can see in Aust

Greg T - One thing I would suggest you did not see on that plane trip was a Morning Glory - It was another type of cloud formation :-)

These clouds happen in only two parts of the world, one place in Mexico I think.

It HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CAPE AND PREVAILING WINDS COMBINING - Woops Caps :-(

Worth seeing and researching - you will not forget them if you are on the ground when they pass over you. Cheers Tony

hi Stormyknight
Well no one is quite sure why they form. Its a rare type of cloud that occur at altitudes up to two kilometers high. The one over Burketown occur predictably
every spring.they might form when flowing moist, cooling air encounters an inversion layer,an atmospheric layer where air temperature atypically increase with height.these tubes and surrounding air can cause dangerous turbulence to airplanes when clear.
