1st time I will be driving to BDV myself - other times I have been there in a plane. Going via Lightening Ridge and then taking a couple of days to get to BDV to be there by Thursday arvo.
In terms of info for you, need some info. What vehicle and what do you intend to do once you get there? Are you asking about what roads to take? Obviously you will be
camping, as accommodation there is booked out
well in advance for the race weekend.

We were going to go to the races also out via
Cameron Corner-
Innamincka -
Walkers Crossing BUT after many emails and talking to people I was turned off the idea for this year as I was told if you like to
camp with 6000 drunk people that party all wk/end then go do it. That's not we were after as it's our first trip into the outback and we're over the party seen !!!!!!!!! Going out via
Broken Hill,
Marree,
Oodnadatta Track to Alice then over to
Birdsville the reverse of original trip.
Don't let this stop you we'll more likely go next year anyway as we are now planning our second trip across the Simpson following a group riding mountain bikes, even before the 1st is started

I can understand what you are saying about
camping at BDV, but there is a huge expanse of desert around the place and you can be quite on your lonesome if you wish to
camp elsewhere. It certainly is an option for me if it gets a bit crowded - after all I am leaving the big city to get away from it all, not get back into it :)
However BDV has a lot more to offer - there is a great museum and the race day is a lot of fun and it has quite a carnival atmosphere. I have flown in three times before, twice to the races. This is the first time driving for me. I think it is worth the trip.

Viz I did say that we're still going to BDV to see the town and the area around, but not over the race wk/end. Trying to stay away from this area as there are races at
Boulia the following wk/end as
well and there will be a crowd following the racing trail through Qld
This is our first major trip to inland Aust. may go next year and get there early
