Hi , I am looking at adding a winch and was after some first hand experience with these .I would get a warn but may only use it 1 or 2 times a year .The ironman ones look the goods and we have a agent in Mandurah which is close .There does'nt seem to be any up to date comments on them here.
Cheers Stuart

Stuart,

I've had one for 2.5 years and although have only used a couple of times in anger (last being 8 weeks ago in the Great Sandy Desert), they work well and are great value. The remote is a real bonus.

Bogged to the sidesteps!

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick
Thats what I was after for feed back . I can afford the warn but just can't see the worth in it for the occasional use it will get.
thanks Stuart

Ta Stuart,

It's always been my belief that the best way to winch is to avoid getting in a situation where you need to winch lol. For the bucks, they're great and the Ironman customer service and product warranty are second to none. Had a very good run out of all their products (suspension, lights and winch).

Cheers Mick

9500 lb unit fitted to the 80 series. Used a few times in serious anger without issues. Fitted in 2007. In my mind, the Warn winch is found wanting with its open solenoid control unit. The Ironman is fully sealed & weatherproof. The remote control is the only way to go. I operate the winch prior & post each trip.
Cheers, Tony

Hi Stuart,

No experience with the ironman but have spoken to a friend who owns a 4wd shop (selling many brands of winches) and he said they are good value for money. Have you had a look at the 12,000lb tigerz 11 winch with synthetic rope or steel cable Click Here ? They've had some good feedback on the various Patrol forums. I have one sitting in the house ready to go in, cost me $799 delivered to Perth (synthetic rope version) from Hobzees in Vic Click Here. Just another option maybe. Good Luck.

Regards,
Darren

PS. Nice colour Patrol

Thanks People
I think most of the so called Chinese made winches with brand names would'nt be to bad for the odd use here and there .The Chap at the ironman outlet said they will rotate the clutch lever to where best suits the bar.

Stuart, I read a comparison of various winches including Chinese made brands purchased off ebay. Some of these winches failed on their first test hauling a 4wd up a hill. The main problem was the gears were not hardened and they stripped. From memory another burnt the motor out due to inferior windings and lack of lubricant. Reputable brands like Ironman would be ok, steer clear of little known brands. Ironman have a wide product base and good reputation on all their products so it is a reasonably safe bet. Remember it's the fact that you use them infrequently that means you have no other way of getting out and so you should have full confidence in your unit. In any event, give it a hard workout a few times while in warranty for your own experience and peace of mind. You could always go a hand winch which will pull you out in any direction and won't be a dead weight on your vehicle all the time. I've gone a PTO with back up hand winch so I can pull all day and use the hand winch to pull in different directions if I need to. Jon.

They are all chinese made except for maybe the top of the range Warn.

The test done in 4WD Action rated the Premier winch as the best of the chinese wiinches.
Its brought to Australia and is dismantled. All the suspect bits are replaced.
The Ironman had a few gremlins during testing ,I forget what now.

The Premier was a bit dearer ar $1400 or so

Ross

I just watched the YouTube video on the Tiger11 site. For $799 (rope) $699 (cable) I was impressed with the couple of comparisons it did and for the odd work that I would put it to (pulling down overhanging branches, etc LOL) I think it wouldn't be too bad.

Was this one of the 4WD Action tested units?

I dont think that one was tested but Im not 100% sure.
It was issue 126

The real test for a winch is how long it can go before it overheats, like if you have to winch over a mountain LOL.

A lot of the chinese winches have good motors ,but other things like wiring and bad seals let them down

Any links to the video?

I have used my kangaroo jack as a winch (with snatch strap and chain) to get me back on the road but kangaroo jacks have not put hand winches out of business. Tirfor style winches are a different beast to electrics and difficult to compare. Needs heaps of effort though, but not affected by flat batteries etc. Electrics and variants are great to drag you through/over terrain you normally couldn't go extending your capability. Hand winches primarily get you out of trouble and back on the road, not to extend your capability (unless you really love exercise).

The main thing of the Chinese made goods like the winches and things, is that with Ironman, you have Australians that go to the factories and check out the quality assurance on a REGULAR basis. A friend goes there, who is actually an EO member. They also sell stuff to the US military - yes to military spec as they have to assure it.

It would really be good if you had to fire in anger but you had to claim your warranty from an importer who hadn't assured the quality :-(
