I'm a bit ticked off!!!

I don't get or send many MM's these days.....but I just rec'd a question from a member and went ahead and typed an in depth (read: "long winded") response to this gentleman.
Got to the end and when I tried to send it, it came back up on my screen in bright red ink that it was too long.....apparently it must be between 6 and 2000 characters only.

I wasn't about to sit there and count up how many characters I'd typed, so I set about removing a few sentences and paragraphs at a time and trying the SEND button....until I eventually gained the satisfaction of seeing my somewhat abridged message finally disappear into the www abyse....!!!

All the other (free) forums to which I belong, provide me with the ability to send PMs of any length I choose, so what's the go here for crying out loud???

I just use the MM to touch base Roachie. Then provide a normal email address for longer or more in depth communications. Features on MM are somewhat limited but it does give you the ability to contact people within the site. Have sometimes found my blog entries disappearing or "not responding" when submiting them after quite a bit of work. That hasn't happened in quite a while thank goodness.

Cheers. Mick

Its OK Robin, Roachie said limited to 2000 not 20, so you can still write that sentence about the Patrols virtues :)

Gee you had me worried for a minute Mark , but I think 20 characters is just enough to point to a new high powered server.

And I thought I could bloody talk.....sheez give the other party a go mate. ;-))

I actually agree it seems a bit pointless having an upper limit on the number of characters in an MM when this is a paid for feature of the site.

He's not a member anymore Rick, so you can't abuse him by MM.

Yeah Roachie, it happened to me quite some time ago.
I got onto David and as far as I can remember, he said he would fix it.

G'day Dave,

Not long now till we'll be up there to catch up with you. I was wondering if you think it would be okay for us to camp at Stephens Creek (where they hold the Friday night SS1 of the OBC) on that Friday night? I don't remember there being any gates when we went in there, so I'm assuming it is not private property; or at least if it is, then nobody's going to get too upset if we plonk there for 8 to 10 hours overnight??

To everybody else who has responded above.....thanks for letting me vent my spleen....hahahaha ;-)

Cheers

Yeh, I didn't want to bore everybody else with my diatribe about the good points about a GU Patrol this fellow was looking at purchasing. He'd asked me what he should look for in a used GU 4.2TDi.

I waxed on (too much) about all sorts of things, without ever realising I was exceeding my allowable MM character alocation......

Roachie,

Not that easy to fix that one as the limit of http GET requests is 2048 chars. I wrote this system using GET due to a technical limitation I had at the time. I did just solve the GET/POST thing in some of the places updates I have installed so may be able to revist this in the future. However having said all this I did not really intend the system to be used for long communications and thought it would be used to pass details and basic requests around so that you can swap email addresses etc.

Anyway when I get a chance I will have a look at the GET/POST length solution and see if I can install it.

Thanks David..... I guess I was just venting because I wasn't aware of the limitation of 2000. I notice when I use (for example) ebay, their message system also has a limit to the nunber of characters for things like feedback and messages to buyer/seller. The "good" part about their "system" is that there is a reverse counter, which alerts you to the fact you have "X" number of characters available and then continually counts down to "0" when you have used up your allocation. Maybe this would be a way around it.

I don't mind that there is a limit....but it would be nice to know (without sitting here and counting them) how many I have used or have left etc.

Cheers

Good idea will look at the reverse counter (I have installed these in other length limited areas so will see what I can install). Thanks DM.

Roachie,

I have just installed a counter to tell you how many chars have been entered. I have also made a few other mods to display the name of the person you are sending the message to in the header. There have also been some other more major updates in the backend but this has nothing to do with how it works to you guys.

Thanks for the feedback

Hmmmm....not sure if I like that term: "updates in the backend"..... makes me tighten-up a certain orofice of my body with anticipation, just like when the doc says 'bend over and relax'.......;-)

Roachie - the difference on here is that Members have a choice of using a range of services - Blogs are designed to support more features for longer stories/reviews/help files, photos etc and MM is really only meant to be an offline short message service style of chat/personal detail exchange service, but David seems to hear your feedback regard msg length so maybe that will avoid future hassles.

Jeez!! Bill you must be bored if thats all you have to whinge about :-))
Maybe go back to work or go wash the truck then you won't have all that time on your hands to write such long messages. :-))

I must say its always good to see David is so receptive to the various feedback provided by the users of the site and willing to try and address the issues to improve the "User Friendliness" of the site.
Well done.
