Anyone thinking about leaving their beloved pet at the Yaps Boarding Kennels, Cairns QLD, DON’T DO IT!! Trying to do the right thing, we left our babies at Yaps for 10 days, whilst touring Cape York (National Parks). We were disgusted to find them both suffering from Canine Cough (one un-treated!) and gained over 4 Kg’s each during their short stay with Yaps. It cost us $600 in boarding fees and vet costs, which they refuse to reimburse. They also had no intention on telling customers waiting to board their pets, that this highly contagious virus was present. They haven’t even apologised nor asked how our pets are recovering, and they are not reviewing any of their policies. Not a great way to start your holidays, when you cannot re-board/camp with contagious dogs!! Our dogs were fully vaccinated against Canine Cough. For the health and safety of your pet please reconsider leaving your dogs at this facility.

I assume you are talking about Kennel Cough?

The virus has a 7 - 10 day incubation period of which the dog does not show any signs of being sick. It is only when they start to cough that you can tell they have the Virus. Even if your Dog has a Full C5 vaccination, it doesn't cover all the possible strains of the virus. It is much like any human Flu/Cold, you can be vaccinated against the most common strain, but that doesn't mean to say you won't get the virus.

As for the Boarding Kennel not advising future bookings - That is wrong.
We had our Dogs in Boarding for 14 days and 1 of our Dogs came home with Kennel Cough, he showed symptoms when we picked him up and the lady running the kennels showed real concern. I kept her informed of his condition and she sent all dogs currently in boarding home with a warning that Kennel Cough had been in the kennels and cancelled all future bookings for 2 weeks.
She also had to advise the local council and Canine control association of the situation.

Sterilisation of the entire kennel area had to be carried out daily until the 2 week period had elapsed.

Don't be to concerned with Kennel cough it is as common as the human flu and more times than not does not require medical treatment. Even though it sounds terrible when they are coughing, the dog isn't in any real pain.
I would suggest keeping them warm and make sure they keep up their fluid intake.

Once your dog has had it it is unlikely that he will catch that strain again.
