Chescold fridges

I have the opportunity to buy a near new Chescold RC1180 3 way fridge/freezer. Havent heard a lot about them. We are using it at the moment and seems to work very well. Are there any problems with these things?

Hi Kirk and Jeanette,
Keep it level, out of the sun, clean were the flame is regularly with metho and a tooth brush.
We have the same size model and it's about the old grey coloured one, and it works a treat.
IMO they're a really good unit.

I have had mine for about 20 years

until the last trip I never had a problem , it was windy

the pilot light kept going out

I have never cleaned where the flame is

is this what is causing the flame to go out and will cleaning it fix the problem

I am going out to clean it now , but will not know if I have fixed the problem until the next trip

Hi Rod,
I clean my after each use and carry a old tooth brush with me just in case it goes out for no reason. On windy days I usually place a chopping board or something similar near the rear to help block the breeze, I never cover or block it off.
An handy thing is A two Zone
Saves having to bend down and check the flame all the time.

On a recent camping trip we kept it in the open annex to the tent, the wind kept blowing the flame out and up went the temperature. Drove me nuts either not on or freezing things.

So I went out and bought an Evakool compressor fridge, I however already own solar panels and generator.

I think my criticism is it's only down point, just keep it out of the open and a lot more less fuss than trying to keep batteries charged. The gas bottle over 4 days and nights lost bugger all.

I've been doing a bit of research on them and asking some questions. It seems the general consensus is that they're great as a gas fridge/freezer if you can keep them level, out of the sun, as others have said, and if you're careful with the pilot light. They run for weeks on 9kgs of gas.

It seems that they're not so great as car fridge/freezers. They draw a lot of current apparently, so a 2nd battery is a must, and even then you have to be careful that you don't run it flat continually.

So my conclusion is that if you do a fair bit of long term camping, that is, you like to stay in the one spot for at least a week at a time, they're a good option to run from gas at your camp site. If you prefer your touring where you only stop a night or two at each spot you're probably better off with a engel/waeco type car fridge/freezer instead where it will obviously stay in the car and your 2nd battery will get charged regularly.

Hope that helps.

I used to own an RC1180 with a textured plastic blue case. It always struggled in the queensland temperatures so moved to an Evacool.

I do have a friend with a later smooth plastic blue case and his seems fine. Perhaps the later model is better.

Thanks for all the great replies. This is the rough finish blue plastic one. We are in Mackay at the moment and have it turned down to almost nothing. Ambient is about 25 to 30 and it will freeze up and blow the beers up if any higher. We are running on shore power at the moment. It is practically new and we are looking at a deal of 300 bucks plus my old 39 litre green metal engel. Think I will go with it. Cheers

I've got the same fridge that you're looking at, can't speak highly enough of them. Like all good 3-ways, great on gas, bugger on batteries at 12V. Sounds like you've got a good deal lined up!

Had ours since new in 1992. Only run it on gas or 240 (no connection in vehicle and we manage without). Has been excellent. Have needed to regas it a couple of times. One tip is, when it has been running on 240, if you need to move it, turn it off and let it cool for 10 minutes or so, before moving it.
