Around
Easter next year my wife's rellies are coming from UK for about 2 weeks, and I have to organize a holiday that includes them. I'm thinking of them flying in to the Whitsundays (
Hamilton Is. via SYD or
Brisbane or whatever), where we will meet them, having driven up from
Adelaide.
After spending a few days there, they could pick up a hire care and we could all drive back to
Adelaide, via Carnavon Gorge, Qld.
I've never been to the Whitsundays or Carnavon Grge but would love to see both.
Any suggestions re things to do or see or great
places to stay en route? We'll be in 2WD vehicles.
Thanks

From
carnarvon George yuou could head down the castlereagh Hwy to
lightning ridge & show them the opal fields - something unique to Australia & hopefully of interest to English visitors. There is always the opportunity to purchase a lovely purely Aus souvenir whilst you are there.
After there an easy drive would get you all to Dubbo & the Western Plains Zoo which is also a good stop .
From Dubbo on to Waikerie & a trip on a
Murray River paddle boat & from there an easy drive into
Adelaide.
Just my thoughts on how to show a couple of overseas visitors a bit of fair dinkum Australia.
Regards Jon

Just be aware that
Easter at
Carnarvon Gorge can be wet and as such cut off with the access.
The Whitsundays will be at the end of the cyclone season with rain possibly spoiling a nice holiday for some. Take this into account when preparing your holidays as many tourists come to our area without this consideration and may leave dissapointed. Prepare for rain and allow flexibility in your itinerary.
The other option is to fly into Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast airport) and decide on your plans based on the weather....either shoot over to hamo for your holidays and/or do some island/reef trips OR head south from there to
Carnarvon Gorge which is over 8 hours away! If you leave from Hamo, you'll add another half day by the time you allow for boat transfers and bus transport to airlie (the nearest vehicle hire location) and/or proserpine.
Don't want to put you off our wonderful area, just need to be aware of the tropical climate.
Hope this helps
Andrew

Why bother to travel big distances interstate when you have it all in SA.
How about
Flinders Ranges (Wilpena and
Arkaroola).
Eyre Peninsula - some of the best beaches in Oz, great fishing and sightseeing.
Mid north - world's best wines, great B&b's, food, history etc.
Fleurieu Peninsula - sightseeing, Victor Harbour,
Goolwa (riverboat history) beaches, food/wine.
Kangaroo Island - world class scenery and wildlife, food and wine.
South East - history, sightseeing, food and wine.
Lower Murray - history (riverboats etc), sightseeing, food/wine, Monarto Open Plains Zoo etc.
Upper Murray - again, food/wines, sightseeing, pioneer history, B&Bs etc
Adelaide Hills - outstanding food and wine, unique sightseeing (early German pioneer history etc), B&Bs, parks, gardens, walks, hikes etc.

Qantas Museum, Stockmans Hall of Fame at
Longreach, it's on the way back. Get to see the type of country in Banjo Patterson's Waltzing Matilda.
Accomodation is limited at
the Gorge (primarily
camping, but there is the small resort).
You must be prepared for minimum of two 10km walks, over 2-3 days along fairly flat paths.
Carnarvon is great, but if you aren't prepared to do the bushwalking there is no point in going to Canarvon.
As someone else said, perhaps see your own backyard in SA and maybe put it together with a week at Port Douglas/
Palm Cove near
Cairns.
