If you could give some idea on what happens when you reverse or lock the hubs in.

Please understand I am only trying to to help, but it sounds to me like maybe the transfer case is locked in 4WD, and you transmission is being 'loaded' with torque as you let the clutch in. I don't claim to be right, but, heh, is this a possible explanation?

I am not really qualified to answer this, mate. I guess the options are either to let an expert 4WD mechanic have a go at it, or else to try to diagnose for yourself by jacking up the entire vehicle (ie all four corners, with due care for stability etc), and then seeing if the front and rear axles are able to turn independently when the transfer case 'thinks' it is unlocked.
I wonder if others can help with this diagnosis?
There is a difference between a transmission wind up, which should be freed by a bit of to and fro driving, or else by jacking up the vehicle and releasing the wind up, and a transfer case internal problem with the centre diff lock perhaps jammed in, which could be selectors or the dog clutches themselves (if you vehicle has such mechanicals).
