My husband and I are wanting to travel around oz for an extended time with our kids who are 9,12 and 14. Am wondering if anyone has any advice on the home schooling for the older 2 who are in high school as we are concerned that they will miss out or fall behind. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Go to their present school and ask the teacher's to put together a work pack for the school year.

If that doesn't suit you, contact the Distant Education Office in your state, and see what they can come up with.

Couple of questions. What state or Territory are you in presently and also where are you planning to travel. Also what years are the children in when you will be travelling. There are some good options available depending upon where and what you are doing. It will however mean a fair bit of work for you as a tutor. I would MM you but you are not a member. Get back to me with that info and I may be able to point you in the right directions.

Hey Mark, we are currently in Vic and are planning to head across to the west coast and up. The boys will be in years 4,7 and 9. Understand it will be a lot of work for my husband and I but think it will be worth it.

Tey won't fall behind, what they learn on the road will stay with them for life. We have been on the road over 2 1/2 years nows. Our girls are alot younger but way advanced for they years. We home school not distance ed. A couple of people we have met on the road with older kids have had work set for them by the school. You could contact your local home school organisation as well. Depends on how long you plan to go for to what will suit you. Where in vic are you. We left Warragul 2 1/2 years years ago and we catch the boat to Tassie on the 12 Sept for another look over there. Have fun on your travels.

Hey Josh thanks for the encouragement i definitely have a lot of work ahead of me. We are planning to head to Tassie first up next year. I hope you dont mind me asking but you've been on the road for a long time - another worry of ours is finances - are you picking up work as you go or had plenty behind you .Sorry if i've overstepped the mark.

Cheers

Hi Gemma, We are in Warragul- Vic at the moment. We catch the boat to Tassie next Saturday (12th sept). We will be in Tassie for a couple of years probably. Keep in touch and drop in if you want when you get there. We might even be in a house by the time you come over. I don't mind you asking about money at all as it is very relevant to travelling and we get asked alot about it. Alot depends on how you travel. When we first headed off I picked up a bit of odd work here and there. I now work as a sales rep for an American company as we travel. If you email me I can go into detail of some of our costs and how we cover them. I hope to have some info to post on here soon. Our email is kidsandall@yahoo.com.au Where in Vic are you? We have had the most amazing time travelling and are plaaning our next trip already before we have finished this one. If you email us we can talk about our schooling and work ect.
Good on you guys for making the decision to go.

As a high school maths teacher myself, I agree that you should set up a meeting with kids teachers and speak to them about it. It shouldn't be terribly difficult for subjects like maths and science where there is generally a text book for each year level which meets the curriculum requirements. The teacher *should* have a subject outline for the year which, at the minimum, should list which topics/concepts that would be covered. It should be simple to cross reference those topics to the text book. If you're lucky the outline will also list learning experiences, assessment schedules, learning outcomes and other useful info.

For other subjects like English and social sciences it'll be a little more tricky. You'll probably need more detailed information about the topics/concepts that should be covered as I doubt there is a year level specific text book for those subjects.

You should also be able to get hold of the subject syllabuses (or whatever they're called in your state) from the Education Department in your state for each subject. Here in QLD they are available for download from the EQ website. There is usually a lot of waffle in those documents, but they should also list the types of things students should know and be able to do by certain levels. They should also give you an indication of achievement levels, like what types of things an 'A' level student should be able to do etc.

I would also ask the teachers for assessment from past years. This will give you an idea of the difficulty level of concepts that your kids should be able to deal with.

hope that helps

That's something you'll have to speak with your school about. Here in QLD I believe the answer would be no. You don't need to achieve anything in order to attempt years 11 and 12, but that may be different in other states/schools. Your school may have specific requirements for each year 11 subject which may cause you complications when get back, but if you can organise it now, it would probably be easier.

For example, as you no doubt know, there are different levels of maths subjects in year 11 and 12. At my school, in order to be eligible for the higher level maths subjects, students are "required" to complete an extension maths subject in year 10. I put "required" in inverted commas because we can't actually enforce any restrictions like that when it comes to the crunch, but the counsellors try to stick to these sorts of rules as much as possible.

If your system is similar to the QLD system, I'd say your biggest issue will be selecting year 11 subjects. So when you're at the school, as well as the teachers, I would be talking to the person who organises subject selections for year 11. It may be a year level coordinator, a school counsellor, a deputy principal or someone else depending on your state and school structure. Your child may know who it is, otherwise you'll need to find out.

Hope that helps

I was one of the fortunate ones that comlpleted two years of corrospondence school while we travelled around Oz, and I must say that the things I learnt on our travels have stayed with me longer than any algebra or physics problem ever have that I learnt in high school. We used to start school at 6:30 in the morning and be finished by 9:00 am (our choice) this left the rest of the day to explore and see parts of the country that not many people get to see. My advice would be to check out a corrospondance school website or contact them , they used to be in North Melbourne by memory, Your kids will thank you for it in years to come trust me.

great to hear from someone who experienced it first hand your response has really helped my eldest come to his decision and he is as excited as we are. Like i told him he only gets to learn in schools what they decide to teach him and travelling will make him and his brothers more well rounded as people. once again thanx for the time to answer

6 mths on the road last year with our at the time 9yr old in grade 5 Qld , had a chat with his school principal and teacher prior to the trip , they gave us the outline + textbooks ect for time period that he would be away , spent only an average of 4hrs per week on the set work for the next 6 mths , got back to school 1 week prior to exams , top of class in maths ,geography ,social studies and english and computer studies ,, the kids will learn and retain more on the road [ real life] than siting in a classroom anyday.
