They are meant to be 'Dune Flags'. I have developed a flag over a few years- that can tolerate many Desert trips, but will not withstand highway usage. Even welding the trailing (flapping) edge will not stand up to 100kph flapping.
I did notice on my last trip out, posers who had done the Simpson trip, were driving up the blacktop to Broken Hill with dune flags still on !!
I have one Tour Company who gives a flag to their clients on Desert trips. His own flag has lasted now 5 years....as it's used how it's meant to be.
I'm still developing, but I don't thjink there is an indestructable solution!!!

Bundy Boy
We got a Squid Pole, $25 from the local fishing shop, and removed the last 2 sections.
On top of it I put a pair of " Bras "

My theory, is that 99% of driverd are male, and they will see a pair of bras, 500 mts before any beacon.
Bloody hell I got some strange looks when I went into St Vincent de Pauls, and started looking at brea,.... the old "cross-dresser"syndrome MMMMMMmmmm

I can assure you that I am no crossdersser, but that shop assistant may need some extra comvincing.

Got stopped by lota of people on the Canning, just to take some photo's

Gotta love it....

Cheers
Bucky

ps unfortunately i cannot upload the foto's till I get home
