Member Porl reminded me of an issue I have with my Honda (2e1?) genny.

The last (only) time I changed the oil I used the grade which was recommended but now have problems starting it.

It will start easily enough but will only run for about 30 seconds then stops. The oil alert light comes on.

Start it again, 30 seconds, off again.

Usually the third, at worst 4th start then all is fine.

I am assuming the oil is too thick when cold but is ok when it warms up a little.

Has anyone had this problem and what did you do (use) to resolve it.

Regards Neil

Yeh that can happen.
When that happens the genny will always run long enough for you to get the boots off, move inside and settle down with a cold/hot one as the temperature dictates before it stops.

Hi Neil,

I use the recommended oil (Honda brand) and dont have any probs at all.

Does sound like you have too thick of oil.

Cheers Mike

probably uses SAE 30 like a 4 stroke mower not a multi grade oil.

Yeh, my air cooled Briggs & Stratton mower engine specifically says to use a single-grade SAE30 oil, not a multigrade.

Honda recomends 10/30 for all their engines, same as I run in the Jack.

I don't believe the generator has the ability to disect what type of oil it's spinning, it sounds like you are low on oil? Have you re-checked the oil level itself?

What happens Terra is that if the oil grade is too heavy then when it is cold it takes longer to circulate thus the sensor "thinks" it is low on oil because it is not getting where it is needed until it warms a bit and becomes more viscous.

I have had the same problem with my Honda genny too, scratched the head checked the oil etc, after 2 or 3 attempts it keeps running, the cold mornings and oil viscosity makes sense .

On checking I realised that when I last changed the oil, which was somewhere out of the way, the only oil I could source was 20w50.

That has now been removed and 15W30 put in.

I will cold start it tomorrow to see if the problem has gone.

Thanks for all your replies.

Cheers Neil.

Neil.
I have the smaller EU10i, and as my truck runs on 20w 50 that is the diet I have fed the Honda on.
For three months this winter it has run an average of 4hrs./day so I have been changing the oil each month.
The oil does become quite discoloured, but no real consumption between changes.
Cold or hot, starts first pull (only use the choke when very cold). Purrs away without a miss running 240v. lights (about 150w.) and a 25a. battery charger (about 400w.)
You can tell it is pulling the load, but remains on "eco" throttle.

Now you got me worried Furph.

Tomorrow will be the test on a cold start with thinner oil. If it still does it I'll have to get the stealer to have a look at it.

Honda sell oil specific for there small engines cost $10 and you'll get about 4 oil changes from the bottle. Change mine on my EU 20I with no problems.

Went down to the Mower (everything 2 &4 stroke) shop not long ago to get a new spark plug and oil for my Honda 2 l gen.

A very young girl came out to serve me and I thought - here we go, what did I do to deserve this god.

Guess what, not only did she know exactly what spark plug I needed, but went straight to location of same amongst a myriad of others, and when I mentioned I needed oil for an oil change, she immediately selected a bottle from under the counter and said this is the one you need to use.

Yep! Honda branded oil - both the spark plug and oil have worked perfectly.

Have to say I was very impressed by that young lady, She put to shame heaps of dudes twice her age in sales that I have come across over the years. I am sure she will go far in life and it was a pleasure rather than a nightmare doing business in that shop.

Have to agree Dust-Devil you would be the one to know as you have more than likely brought more parts than all on here put together LOL

Good to see you got satisfaction ( :-) ) Dusty.

I cold started the genny this morning with the 15-30 oil in it and had the same problem. 3 starts before it would continue.

I went to the local Mower (and everything 4 stroke) shop inc Honda in Bunbury and bought a bottle of Honda branded oil which is 10w-30.

I have put this in and will see how it goes in the morning.

One thing the lady at the shop said is that it is vital to keep the sump full to the point of overflowing, as you would for a car diff filler. Not doing this can trigger the 'oil alert' sensor.

Cheers

Neil.

Yippeeee, did another cold start this morning and no stop-start. One pull and it started and kept going.

Obviously the oil viscosity was the problem and now using the Honda oil 10w-30 has fixed it.

I have no doubt that any 10w-30 would do, and may be cheaper than the genuine at $12 a litre but the Honda bottle comes with a nifty pourer that makes refilling a breeze, no messing with a funnel.

Thanks for all your input and hopefully this thread may help someone else too.

Regards
Neil

hi
the viscosity was the problem , but dont get sucked in by the honda brand name
they dont own an oil company or oil well all they do is buy oil in and put it in their own labelled bottles then double the price per litre any 10w/30 oil will do no matter what name is on it the guy thats getting away using 20w/50 must be in a warmer climate situation ? i owned an old 800w honda gen i used w 30 in it no probs but it gave problems when i tryed 20w50 in cold winter temps too thick
cheers mazcan barry
