Just hired a ute - expected a 6 cyl 4.2 but now have 4.5 v8.
Doing Simspon crossing next week.
This site's Trek fuel log doesnt include any entries for the V8.
So.....same same to the 4.2 or what?
Cheers
Dave

Do you mean turbo 4.2 or NA?
The Assuming a turbo 4.2, the V8 will get 1 - 2 l/100k better in the highway and 1 - 2l/100k worse under load IF you don't feed them horses too much.

Official fuel consumption figures for V8 are the about the same as the previous factory turbo 4.2 which is what I have.
Simpson crossings are not bad on fuel provided you air down your tyres and take it easy.
Previously I've needed 94 to 105 litres from
Oodnadatta to
Birdsville. I expect the V8 will be around that mark.

I would agree with Phil on fuel. I own a V8 ute vdj and having done a lot of very
soft beach work with air down tyres and they consume about the same as the previous 4.2 turbo 6 cyclinder.

I have a V8 tray back.
Back from a double crossing. East to West on French line I filled up at
Birdsville and at
Kulgera. Second crossing including part Rig track I filled up at Mount Dare and again at
Windorah. So you can cover it with ease as long as both tanks are full at start.
I have not done all the litres per 100 k calculations yet. Only back yesterday.

a follow up for anyone interested. Have now done the calculations.
On westbound crossing refuelled at
Kulgera after filling up at
Birdsville, distance 828k, litres used 126, litres per 100k 15.24.
On eastbound crossing refuelled at
Windorah after filling up at Mount Dare, distance 1.018 k, litres used 148, litres per 100k 14.52.
