Hi,

I am trying to figure out what would be the best rig to buy my son, got around $5-7K. Want something safe (e.g. not a Toy Hilux). Good on fuel etc. He wants a 4x4 but not planing on doing the Simpson, yet! I have good luck in the past with Jackaroos but not the diesel. Anything like a Landcruiser would be too costly on fuel.
Any help would be great.

Gday
Have a look around for a 3ltr petrol Patrol. They are reasonably cheap and go long miles.

Two good buys in the trader, a Pajero and a Jeep. Both diesel and bullet proof!

Was just thinking the same thing about the Pajero - looks good.

Mark it really looks like a reasonable buy. It's got a lot of extra kit and most importantly, it's been serviced every 5k.

Cheers.

I know this sounds funny but that Pajero looks too good for a young guy to be in! It looks like it's been well looked after and knowing what I was like growing up and all my mates, it's be a shame to see a good rig...you know what I mean?

I'm in a similar predicament selling our VT Commodore. It's been with us for a while and my father in law had it before us, always looked after, low km's, have a mechanic in the family who I did some work for, so it too has been looked after. Now I'm a high school teacher and some of my senior kids have heard it's going on the market and some are very keen but I've told them they can't have it and I'm going to sell it to an old fart who'll look after it. I'd hate to see it around town (guaranteed here) lowered with a fat exhaust and doing wheelies everywhere. As for the father in law, he'd cry! But their money is just as good - what do you do?

After all that (sorry for rant), if the $$$ stretch enough for the lad, I'd jump at this Pajero, I bet it won't last long.

Cheers,

Mark.

Good day Michael,
I remember lusting after 60 series 20 years ago when I had my 40. Took My uncles 82 60 series 2f for a run recently, felt like a antique after the Jack sorry.
But he has towed a tri axle van all over Australia with it still going well, rear springs a bit saggy.
Cheers Pete

To answer your original Question the v6 3.2 Jacks are a very good thing. Very long lived motor similar to the rb30 motor in the Patrols. Economy provided yopu get a man is about 11 to 12 on the open road and 15/100 arround town. For $7000 you will pick up a 96 or 97 with arround $150000ks. The motor if serviced will do 450000ks. The automatic gearbox is the weakest link in petrol Jacks and lasts about 200000 to 250000k and will cost $3000 to replace.
