Pajero for the diesel, the jack as much as I like them have had issues with the 3.0 ltr diesel.
V6 jack not renowned for its economy but they go hard.
Now over to the pajero owners for their side of the story.

Thanks mate,
The car is going to be for my kid. He wants an auto! That leaves out most diesels.
what do you reckon? Do you have a Jack 3.2 and what fuel K's do you get?

The older 3.1 td diesel is a brilliant motor, also used in the Mus. What is your budget? You can pick up Jacks with this motor with less then 200000ks for about $8000. The 3lt Paj we had was very reliable, but the narrow angle v6 felt crude compared to the wide angle v6s Jacks and used slightly more fuel although being a man it was better then swmbo currant 03 Nullarbor auto
Where are you?

Good on you For Joining as a member John Welcome. You will have a smaller choice in Tas and they seem to be a lot dearer. Check out car sales in NSW and you will see what I mean. The other option is to buy one up here and drive it home.

Had three Jackaroo 3.0 diesels all manuals in my work situation, two blew up the last not replaced due to the jack being discontinued. The Jackaroo relies on oil circulation to start the engine if the incorrect oil is used it will not start & certainly will run like it is on two cylinders. They use a really strange grade oil something like a 3 - 9 instead of say a 20-40. I had the SE models & thought they were underated as vehicles good creature comforts BUT service difficulties were a problem I was in a country town & had to take the vehicle to a city dealership to have the tappets done at 20,000km the two local dealers did not have the equipment to do it. A very pleasant 350km drive...NOT. I have owned 2 Pajero diesels & the NP auto was by far the best 4X4 I have ever owned. This is my honest opinion I have driven numerous 4 WD in my job & have owned Range Rovers, L/Cruisers, Hi lux, Nissan GQ & GU's & disco's they were all good in various ways but for $15,000 to $23,500 an auto NM or NP GLS auto would be a great vehicle to own for your son. They are a great daily driver (especially for a family) however having the Independent
suspension does not give them the heavy off road characturistics of a Patrol, disco or cruiser. but having said that I have driven them in sand & mud & they leave the others for dead but they are still very capable off road.

Orejap His budget as stated in another thread was $7000 to $8000. Agree the cat injection system on the 3lt was a disaster, but every other Isuzu motor is brilliant both the v6s and various other diesels. Not to many other petrol motors will do the ks Isuzu motors do,m especially not Mitz, You only have to look at how many petrol Pajs have reco motors
The diesel I recommended was the older 3.1 which have a brilliant rep. The problem with the 3lt was it was 10 years ahead of everyone else(common rail dohc 16 valve) but the injection system was not sorted
Cheers Pete

Do you mean diesel or petrol?
I have had both 3.5 petrol Pajero and 3.5 petrol Jack. Both good solid cars both similar 15/16lt per 100km. The Pajero was a bit more refind but the Jack was quite a bit cheaper so hard to compare on a price or refinement level as both are so different. Ultimately if your son is comfortable in a Jack then it should return similar fuel economy but cost him less up front to buy so one of these may be looking hard at in my opinion. Neither vehicle will cope with severe punishment like the Patrols but that is not their intended use either so keep away from something that looks like it has been punished. Should be plenty of "shopping trolleys" to be found in both vehicles.
Cheers, Trevor.

The Paj 3.2 DiD coupled with the auto tranny is an awesome combination.

Just saw your other post.. The 3.2DiD would be a little out of that price bracket.
The older cars don't have the brilliant auto that the later models (NM onwards) have.
Having said that the 2.8 diesel is a very good motor. The 3lt petrol can be a little thirsty and lacks a bit on bottom end grunt. Not such an issue in an auto though.

What about an Isuzu MU 2.8 TD or the later 3.1 TD, same as the Rodeo and Jackaroo. Priced from $7000 downwards, can not see why 500Ks is not possible if looked after, one of
mine has done 250Ks and the other 200Ks and they are better built than the Jackaroos, oh yes I am biased lol
