Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am off to the UK in October and was wondering if my Navman iCN 520 will work in the Northern hemisphere.
My thoughts are that a satellite is a satellite and it should make no difference.
Any thoughts please.
Will.

Yes it will pick up the signals and work out your position, might take a while when first switched on though, but you'll need to get the local maps.

Yes it will work.
I am not familiar with that unit specifically but if it uses maps, like a tomtom for instance, then as said above, you will need the local maps.
If it is a straight gps like my garmin plus that is not necessary.
The gps uses all satellites that are visible to it, it may use 9 or 10 if they are seen to triangulate your position.
You may have to enter a Set-up phase to initiate it again so it knows roughly where you are. This is normal if you travel over 500 kms with it turned off.
Hope this helps
Neil.

G'day Neil,
Thanks for that info.
The Navman uses a SD card system and I have the maps loaded on that.
Actually I use the Navman as a gps reciever and have managed to run tomtom mapping on it, which I find better than the navman version.

You should send Navman an email asking them for access to the maps and instructions etc just to be sure

As others have said yes, you can get street nav' maps to upload to a unit, for this post I will refer to Garmin units, If you purchase a Nuvi 765 it will have all major roads and some minor already installed as part of the base map,
If you need street level Navigation for all of Europe check this link,
Mapsource City Navigator Europe

Not to mention
the Spot, EPIRB, emergency food, safety boots etc, and don't go alone.
Just kidding, after the saga over hiking in the snow!

Make sure the compass(Magnetic not Digital) you take works in Europe because compasses (such as Silva) make different compasses for different regions of the world. Ones used in Australia may not be accurate in Europe. :)

I've been all over UK and Europe using Tom Tom on a windows PDA/Phone with inbuilt GPS. I got the maps and loaded them on an SD card before I went. No different to using it here, just a different map.
As for using paper maps in Europe.....too many streets and towns with names longer than the alphabet. A piece of cake with the GPS.

Thank you every one for your informative replies and your humorous ones as
well.
I think I will not travel to Wales using the Tomtom, I can image trying to find some of the road names.
I will have to see if I can download some taffie voices for when I travel there.
Come to think of it, I could personalise the voice I use for different areas.
Cockney rhyming slang for the East end, a Gordie voice for Tyneside, a Scottish broque, the mind boggles (& wanders) at the possiblities.
Thanks again,
Will.

God know how my Garmin Nuvi would go in Wales becaue it certainly makes a hash of street name pronunciations in
Melbourne.
