Not sure if this is the right spot to ask this question, if not I apologise. We are currently travelling around oz with our 2yr old and 4yr old and are looking to change from our current van which is too small (Jurgens Stargazer) although very competent off road. We now wish to buy an Off road Family van most likely a Trakmaster, Phoenix, Kedron or Bushtraker but still wish to keep the van under 19ft if possible does anyone know of any such vans for sale at the moment. I have looked with no luck we would be very interest in purchasing one ASAP if there is something suitable out there! Thanks

What will you tow it with? The 'big 4' are heavy vans - which goes with the strength. At that size, they will mostly be made for two, and may or may not be suitable for bedding a family.

Thanks Motherhen, We have a 100 serices Turbo Diesel LC with heavy duty springs, 2 inch lift and airbags but we would like to limit weight as much as possible so would like to keep the size of the van to 19ft. Really do note wish to tow a van much more than 2200kg Tare. No need for a toilet or internal shower although an outside shower would be desireable.

Thanks

Hi Trouble & Strife

Ours is TARE 2.22 and it is 18' early model Bushtracker without any of the extras the modern ones have. Loaded up for the trip it was 3 tonne (while on the vehicle) just packing supplies for two of us. Your cruiser will do the job, but we prefer to have a safetly margin. Our 3 litre Patrol towed it fine, but it would have struggled when we met unexpected deep sand or if something went wrong. The main consideration was that with the water tanks filled and nothing else packed we would have been over the legal limit for our auto gearbox. On a road yesterday the fine clay powder formed deep ridges between the wheel tracks really caused a sway when crossing (eg when there was approaching traffic), having the powerful and heavy tow vehicle was an advantage. Today we saw a Landcruiser which was totalled; the poor man pulled off onto the edge for an approaching road train (you have to get out of their way on these Qld single lane width bitumen roads), and his Cruiser rolled. Weight adds to your rig quickly when you start packing and these are all things to be considered, as is the legal total mass for your Cruiser (that includes you family in it, the load and the laden van). All things that need to be considered when you go for a caravan that will do dirt roads.

Buy a Caravan and motorhome Trader

There was a shorter one in there last month Have chucked mine out so cant refer to it.

You are, as well as serious weights looking at serious $$$$ in buying one of these .

However they are built for the conditions.

Cheers

Have a look on here:

http://www.bushtrackerforum.com/

You will find a number of family bushtrackers for sale. Whilst they are expensive, if you decided to re-sell the van on your return, you would more than likely recoup most of your outlay back, provided that you looked after it.

I have spent a lot of time looking through the archives of these forums and came to the conclusion that there is nothing out there that touches these for quality and after sales service..... and you pay for that quality. Most of the other 'off-road' vans are simply based on the Bushtracker model and there are many other brands that are simply put together with sticks and glue. Just my research so far and not everyone will agree with me. It also depends upon where you want to take the thing in terms of how strong you need it to be.

My plan in a few years when my 6 months long service leave is due is to purchse one of these and sell it again on return. I feel it will be cheap and RELIABLE accommodation for the trip.
