Has anyone checked out the smart chargers at Aldi, I believe for under $100. Up to 12 amp charge rate and has a 12v 12amp power socket for using with fridges etc. Also suitable for AGM batteries. Comments appreciated!!
thanks Kc

At $99 my first reaction would be , quality ?? and is it really a true 12amps ??
In other words will it last and if so how long will it take to charge larger batteries?
If it is ready to fail then the $99 would be better spent with one of Derek's battery chargers or a Ctek 15amp for $250.00. IMO

I'd back that up.
My experience with Aldi electronic stuff, GPS, DVD player etc has not been good and they are difficult to deal with when returning faulty goods.

Jim,!! What do you mean! Aldi are hard to deal with; returning goods?
My F/inlaw went thru 3 TV sets from that Joint!!, all stuffed up at about the 2mth time, after the episode with the last one and the old bugger at 88yrs of age threating the aldi manager in the car
park with giant fists raised!, soon had all his money back in his pocket.....lol..lol. ..It was a freaky situation, but a old time solution worked in a modern era!. Hahaha.!
Cheers Axle

Here are the specs
* Three stage high frequency charge
* Fault diagnosis and alarm
* For 12V lead acid batteries
* DC 12V output up to 12 amp
For $20 extra I got this

It's available from

3 stage vs a 7 stage automatic - it's a no brainer but it runs out tomorrow I believe. I bought it last weekend and it works perfectly.

Thanks Everyone... The projecta looks good but a little more than I wanted to spend.... could be a goer though. On ebay they are $140 and the larger model $180.

The Projecta, when I posted, was available from Auto One for $119. It may still be available today.
Check this and scroll down to the Projecta 8 amp 7 stage 12V battery charger
http://www.autoone.com.au/latestcatalogues/latestcatalogues.asp
Click on catalogue, download the PDF and go from there.
If you think that $120 is too much for a 7 stage charger then good luck in finding something better for the price.
BTW, I was in Aldi today and there was no
sign of their charger.

Had a interesting experience this afternoon with two of these switch mode style battery chargers.
I had left my dual battery solenoid on for a week and half and the Hilux hadnt been used for that time. Both batterys flat as a maggot actually both where at 5V measured with a calibrated Fluke 83. I tries a brand new AC Delco charger.
Well what a fiasco. It thinks that the battery is a 6V olt battery (standard lead acid)so that is never going to work so I get out my old transformer rectifier charger I made as a apprentice 16 years ago, Bang we are away and charging at 3 amps. 10 hours later the battery is at 13.2 Volts and the charger current had dropped to 0.8A.
Mean while the mate offered me his switch mode charger so I thought yeah I can do my Sealed lead Gel auxillary battery on the rear with it. It to was at 5V. Connect it up and it starts drawing 8 amps. 15 minutes later I check it no LEDs. Battery still at 5V.
I know has the old transformer rectifier charger on it pulling 6 amps and volts climbing.
So it seems to me these switch mode chargers arent worth a wheelbarrow load of rocking horse poo when you have really flatened your battery right down. Yet the old tried and proven gear pulls through. Will be asking one of the electrical engineers at work why it is so tomorrow.

Modern chargers have protection built in because a battery that's been over-discharged needs to be charged at very low current to minimise any damage to it.
Sure, a normal 3-stage charger will charge the battery, but you'll and with the battery's life being shortened.
