New Patrol "late 2010"

Nissan will launch an all-new Patrol Down Under, but not until late 2010
Nissan Australia boss Dan Thompson has confirmed an all-new Patrol is on the way. But you'll have to wait until at least the middle, and probably the end of 2010 for it to arrive Down Under.

Thompson told the Carsales Network the all-new full-size 4x4 would be launched globally towards the end of 2009. Though he would not divulge any details on the new full-size offroader or the line-up, the confirmation flies in the face of speculation that Nissan had effectively killed off the long-time model.

"We will see the new Patrol globally unveiled next year -- not for Australia but globally… So the product is real, the product is coming and we're sort of at that final stage firming up the plan for us," Thompson said.

Thompson said the local operation was still working on aspects of the business case of Patrol.

"For Australia, it's still a work in progress... But it will be coming to Australia."

Thompson would not pinpoint currency or regulatory issues as the hold-up.

"It would be nice to have the car tomorrow, but that's not a reality. The global unveil will be at the end of next year and probably a fair amount of time after that will be the reality for us," he opined.

"It's more the [overall] business case and unfortunately the business case involves all those issues... But once again the vehicle will come -- we've just got to work through those last details." he said,

Speculation has the new Patrol débuting at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, but Los Angeles is more likely from a market standpoint. Thompson would not comment on whether the 4x4 would retain its traditional body-on-frame construction.

Whether the move to unitary construction happens or not, it is likely the new Patrol will move from inline to V6 powerplants -- in both petrol and diesel versions.

Tipped to find a home under the new Patrol's bonnet is Renault's new V6 dCi which was co-developed with Nissan. The new 3.0-litre engine has been designed for both transverse and longitudinal applications and can be adapted to pass Euro5 and California's tough emission regulations.

Rated at 245hp and 450Nm in its initial incarnation, in rear or four-wheel drive applications, the V6 dCi will deliver torque outputs of up to 550Nm.

Sounds like just the engine to take it up to the Toyota LandCruiser's turbodiesel V8, Mr Thompson...

I think if Nissan are smart they will release a Patrol that is both economical and affordable along with being capable off road like the current platform. I don't believe they will attempt to match the Cruiser, the market is too small, the market is crying out for a $50k V6 Turbo diesel Large 4x4 that is affordable to service and fuel. The new cruiser has sold better than expected after sales foreacasts were written down but it's big and expensive.

$50,000 sounds a bit light on for a V6 4x4 turbo deisel. The ST is more than that as a basic before fitting towbars and maybesomething on the front and another 3k if you want auto

Yeah fair enough $60k would be better, $70k for the top of the line. I agree on the 3 litre comments, has to be around the 4 litre mark IMO however I get the impression this isn't going to happen. How many of you would buy another 3 litre patrol..?

Just what the new Patrol needs, a new highly strung 3 litre engine, regardless of being a 6 cylinder V profile... Its gonna be a hard sell if it bears the same capacity as the previous disaster where they failed to support their customers.. Why not a 4.5 litre to match the BlandCruiser?? Something simple with more engine room.. Michael

I recon as a marketing thing the 1st release will retain the current 3.0Tdi. This gets rid of them off the shelf and into the 'New' car when all those who don't know better go out and get buy the "new" model.

They did it with the 2.8 when the GU's came out until the unveiling of the mighty 3.0Tdi grenades.

Wait for the series II edition about 18 months after the release of the new shape I recon. Then there will be "new" engine to kick sales along and make all those with series I want to upgrade....I think I read somewhere it's V6 common rail TDi made by Renault again

We'll see I guess..but's that's my guess on the table....I'll wager 20cents on it! :-)

I really have no idea of course!

Andrew, I reckon they will flick the 3.0 as quick as they can. The only 2 countries in the world that have the common rail 3.0 are Australia and NZ. A total of say 10000 engines made since it was released. Every other country takes the 4.8 ( petrol), 4.2 or 3.0Di still. If they do go to this new V6 3.0, then they reduce the no of engines they need to support.
