I am trying to find companies - in Melbourne - that supply and fit canvas awnings for caravans. I have a Jayco Dove and would like to know if anyone is able to recommend a manufacturer in Melbourne.

Thank you.

Cannot really help you with Melbourne but when we had the same problem of supply and fit in Northern NSW we were put onto (think outside the square) boat trimmers who make canvas awnings for boats. Because there are so many makes and models of boat some with flying bridges some without etc etc everything they did was made to measure and nothing was too much trouble.

My experience has been that the large commercial awning manufacturers charge like wounded bulls. Try your local canvasmaker. BTW I had a Jayco Eagle Outback and found that erecting and taking down the "bag" awning was an absolute nightmare. Might not be so bad with the smaller Dove, but if someone tries to sell you one see if they have one available that you can try out. If you have the space to store it get one that slides on and off when you want to use it. If not investigate the possibility of a roll-up awning.

Teege,
I can't fit a roll-out due to width of my garage. That would be my first choice.
I wasn't referring to the bag-awning - just a plain canvas awning that I can slide onto the c-channel when needed. It is worth knowing that the 'bag-type' are fiddely.

Do you have the bag-type bend-end flies? Are they a nuisance to put up and fold-down as well?

Any comments appreciated as I am getting the Dove new and would like to iron these things out before delivery [I previously had a 'Swan'].

I haven't had my camper now for 5 years, but that's another story. The only advantage to be gained out of having the flies bagged is that you dont have to worry about where to carry them. I think they are a necessity, particularly if you intend heading into warmer climates. They are not as difficult to work with as the awning because they are not as heavy and don't have the pole down the outside edge. BTW I lost my pole carrier on one trip and the mob that supply Jayco with their awnings etc quoted $700 to replace the poles for the awning and the flies. I replaced them from the local camping shop for abour $100.

I'll second that too Jim.

Purchased some canvas from Tebbs last summer for my swing seat cover and they were by far the best priced and had heaps of canvas to choose from.

Well worth a trip to their business to view their displays.

Cheers.

Tried Alpine Canvas - seemed disorganised and didn't really know too much about what I was asking for. Perhaps off the shelf purchase may be OK. Counter staff eating lunch during my enquiries - very off-putting.

Southern Cross Canvas - very helpful, more professional service.

Tebbs Canvas in Dandenong - brilliant. By far the best knowledge, service and advice. Placed my order with them. Highly recommended.
