I would like to try and get an idea of the amount of ulp needed to cover this distance, about 800km.
How does the sand compare with the simpson as I know what sort of mileage I get out there.

Sand is not the real problem..it's the crawling over the corrigations and washouts !! In our V6 ULP vehicel..from memory we used the 110l tank plus 2x20l jerrys...but I don't remember the actaul usage. I'll check my files at home and let you know...
It's a fantastic trip !!!!!

That would be great.
We would carry 190L, should be ok by the sounds of it.

Mate- that's allows about 24l/100k. If you budget for 18 to 20l/100k should be sweet. What type of vehicle???

2000 Paj. We use about 22/23 in the simpson and I figured if the terrain is easier we should be ok. Not concerned after Ilkurlka as the distance to the next fuel stop is a lot less.

If you run Premium for a few tanks before and during the trip (if available) it will extend your range by 50 to 80 ks per tank.

Pretty simple really, if you run a paj or a Jack on premium regulary you will get better economy by 50 to 80 ks per tank. Plenty of info on this at the Paj forum and the Jack forum.Towing my 4.2 m boat I normally use 13.5/100 on premium 98, stuck 91 in for two tanks and I was back to 15s. Not saying you will save money as it works out cost neautral, but the ecu will take advantage of the better fuel. BUT normally takes about 3 tanks for the ecu to re adjust.
You do end up with a better performing vehicle(lost 15ks on the long climb out of Sofala with the boat on). You also get better range which is importent outback, just not sure if premium is available at a lot of remote areas.
Hope I have explained it better this time

Thanks - thought your magic formula might work on turbo diesel Hilux as well .
Some say BP diesel is more efficient - any comments

I have not owned a Diesel for ten years so no first hand knowledge, but a lot of truckies reckon BP is best. I also seem to get worst fuel economy out of Caltex , then BP or Shell but their are a lot of variables such as barmetric pressure, direction of wind etc.
A lot of members swear by some of the diesel additives as well.

Dean,

Don't the Exploroz Trek notes cover this? They are usually great source of information for you.

Cheers Mick

We used 160 towing a Cavalier camper. It was a great trip. Corrugations were the only issue. No sand hills to speak of. Great shower at Ilkurla and Kaiser is a friendly camp dog.

ALso agree with figures around 17 to 20 lt/100
The west oz side is a breeze and the road quite good, the SA side is about 17/20 kph stuff due to the corregations up until about emu

The road is quite hard and not that soft like the simpson

I would also like to add it is a real shame more people don't walk further from a campsite for No1 & 2 and use a shovel.
It is a discrace and spoils a lot of campsites seeing white paper in the middle of the bush
