In my search for a 100 series turbo diesel I have found 1999 and 2000 models with lower than expected Kms. Are the early models OK or should I look for a later model, say 2003 or later. I understand the 5 speed auto is better but funds do have their limit.

I thought the TD started here in 2000 or maybe even 2001. It was sold elsewhere earlier so maybe the 1999 is an import?
Not that that should necessarily influence you.

Bill, are you sure what your looking at is the 100 series or 105 series.

The 100 series had the factory tubo engine 1HDFTE and IFS and the 105 series had the 1HZ engine and SFA, and many people fitted an aftermarket turbo to them. They also have a different gearbox between them, the R series for the 1HZ and the H series for the 1HDFTE and petrol engines.

Factory TDs started in 2000, IFS with the FTEs in them,if Auto they were a 4 speed. a 1999 prolly will be a 1HZzzzz with a hairdryer bolted on it.

Thought the 1HD -FTE and IFS didnt start till mid 2002.

Thats what an article in 4wd Monthly said and we all know they are 105% correct dont we.

The barn door standard model kept going till about 2006 with the 1HZ in it.

HDJ100 were released in Australia in 8/2000 from memory

There are some jap import ones floating around but to identify if it is a Australian spec model check the model code as all Australian spec Toyota's have a Q in the model code

For example HDJ100R-GNMNZQ

The first turbo diesel here was called a gxv, and was basically a lexus with t/d motor/ifs and 4 speed auto like the 80 series....they r ok...the 5speed is better but hey, the 4 speed has proven itself to be indestructable....i would be more worried about the front diff and suspension in it...they break so easy.
There is one on ebay for 21k at the moment.

The HDJ100 was released in Australia in September 2000. Anything earlier than that will be a 1HZ with an aftermarket turbo. Turbo 1HZs aren't a great option as you don't know the quality of the install job or how high the previous owner has been running the boost. They destroy pistons pretty readily if the boost is too high. I would stay away from them.

Be aware that all the turbo diesel 100 series' are IFS. All the 105 series naturally aspirated diesels are live axle. Unfortunately, in all Mr Toyota's wisdom, a live axle factory TD 100 series was never produced, much to the disdain of 4x4ers everywhere. That's one of the reasons factory TD 80 series' have held their value so well.

To answer your question, the early HDJ100s are fine. The 1HD-FTE engine is basically the old 80 series TD but with electronic fuel injection. So the engine was tried and tested long before the 100 series was released.

I would be looking for one with a complete (and good) service history. If they're serviced well, these things will run forever.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys for all your comments and help. We will be looking for a 2000 on toyota with a factory fitted turbo. We will be towing around aus a 20 foot Evernew that other guys on Exploroz recommended over other models. It bloody heavy hence we need the torque to get it up the hills and down the dirt roads in the great outdoors.
