G'day All
Looking for advice for the most interesting route from the
camp ground at
Lake Mungo to Ivanhoe. I've just started chasing up maps etc, but would appreciate contributions from folks who have done it.
Many thanks
John

John G we wer down there about four years ago and we went in through
Hillston and Mossgiel, but we chewed up a bit of pertol getting in there, some
places I thought were small towns were just
places. We didn't carry enough spare fuel, just 20ltrs, so make sure you have plenty.
If I were to come out to Ivanhoe I would go that way, North Eastern of Mungo straight past the turn off to
the woolshed. Takes you up through
Lake Arumpo and several other old dry lakes and whenever we got to the top of a rise we stopped and had a look around. We have been there twice now and Fiona wants to go back again for sure.
Leave the
camp ground and head north.
Fiona & Paul - enjoy the trip

Fiona & Paul, do you mean
Lake Garnpung or
Lake Arumpo?
Arumpo is on the way to
Mildura from Mungo.

Just going off the top of my head for old
lake names and we were travelling south generally, unsure of distance from entrance to Woolsheed complex because we were travelling with patched up camper trailer (busted a shackle and disk brakes caught fire).
Lake Garpung was in the mix of old lakes but I was sure
Lake Arumpo was in the group we went through. We have never been on the road to
Mildura, apart from visit to motel type facility about 5-6km from Mungo to make a telephone call. I'll
check through my photos to see if I can get a better one.

You were right it was
Lake Garnpang and we came in from the
Balranald end the first time, so sometime I must have been somewhere else to where I thought I was. So disregard the previous image, that was Arumpo so I must have got excited somewhere.
That's probably why Fiona wants to go back again....

John, there is a road going north from Mungo through
Lake Garnpung and you get to
t junction then off up to Darnick. Then you follow the rail line to Ivanhoe.
I have gone up to the
T junction and then to
Pooncarie, not Darnick though.
That road is good, but not all weather road.
My map shows there is another road through to the Cobb from Garnpung. I would imagine this would be an OK road too.
There are quite a lot of changes in the vegetation going out in those areas. It's generally pretty flat though.
You can't get fuel at Mungo either.

Pooncarie either now.

John G
We went from Ivanhoe to Mungo 2 weeks ago via Darnick and
Lake garnpang.
They were working on the road from Ivanhoe to darnick at the time, but the road was fine anyway.
Nice easy run down.
the run from Ivanhoe to
Cobar at the moment is beautiful with everything green. the country looks like its been manicured, probably from the heaps of goats in the area
cheers
