Hi all.
Have a problem with our Waeco our more likely with the vehicle wiring. Plugged in to 12v with the vehicle not running I keep getting one error flash about every 2 seconds. However if I just turn on the ignition then turn the Waeco off then on it works perfectly. Strange isn't it? Multi meter shows 12.48v at the rear plug and the same on the auxiliary battery.
Also if I connect the Waeco direct to the vehicle battery it again works perfectly.
Has anyone any clues as to the reason and how to fix?
Many thanks.
John

In your Waeco manual they should indicate what that flash and delay mode indicates, we have an Evakool and there are about4 or 5 different error message codes. Hope this helps.

The problem is the wiring in the vehicle is to small. It happens all the time as the manuafacturers use the cheapest wire they can get away with.
Is it a prado?
Get it rewired I'm sure in the Waeco manual it tells you the minimum size cable to use for the distance from the battery.

Hi bks
Yes. It is a Prado. However the wiring to both the plugs in the back is 6mm. I've also had a new inline fuse and holder installed.
As I said I am very confused as to why it works perfectly when the ignition is turned on (motor not running) but not in a normal situation when parked or camped.
Keep thinking that it's back to the auto electrician again.

If you are using the cigarette lighter plug/output you'll' probably find that the wiring is too light/small and insufficient voltage is gettiing through. You might have to replace with decent diameter/capacity wire.

Yep, I have two Waecos that came in my camper. If the battery was down one tiny bit the red lights come on. When the car is plugged in and running no problem. At first I was not sure what was happening until one of the Waecos packed it in. Waeco were good and fixed it under warranty. I have now upgraded all the wiring to 6mm2.

Hi David
Wiring is all 6mm so I'm totally baffled especially why it runs perfectly with the ignition on but no engine running.
May see you around
Mullewa in a couple of weekjs

Wiring sizes can be confusing - there is a big difference between 6mm2 and 6mm. If it's 6mm overall diameter, there is a chance that the wire is quite small and the plastic fairly thick.
6mm2 refers to cross sectional area of the copper conductor.
After all that, for any 12 volt DC system, bigger is generally better.

Hi John,
Had the same sort of problem with
mine.Changed the socket to a better quality unit and fixed the problem.I also had problem with the lead that plugs into fridge, this caused a simular symtems.I wedged the plug into fridge to tighten it up.Fridge has been great ever since.I hope this helps.

I agree if you have 6mm its not the wiring. I have 5mm and that works fine. perhaps its a dodgy connector, I have recently hard wired into the waeco and this has eliminated the poor contacts I was getting through the cigarette socket. works great I just stow the cable under the carpet and plug into fridge when needed

I had almost the exact same symptoms.
Without the fridge connected (or without compressor running) I'd see over 12V but it would still give an error. I thought it was the wiring at the back (cigarette socket etc) but it turned out to be one of the terminals on a circuit breaker I had under the bonnet. Of course, that was the last piece of wiring I changed - so now have to go and reverse all the other things.
I found it was fine with the engine running and soon after (battery 12.8V) but once it got down to around 12.4 or thereabouts it would start acting up. I think the dodgy connection was effectively lowering voltage by about 1.5V when the fridge started.

Had similar problems with a Waeco 40l. Advice on this
forum was diverse but not dissimilar to above comments. Wiring, Ignition, Battery was OK after exhaustive testing. Took fridge to Waeco agent and after two goes at repairs it turned out to be a faulty board inside the fridge. Was replaced under warranty. Since then running
well.

Like others I have had experience with a similar problem on two Waeco's in two different vehicles. In both cases it was the earth wire.
The earth wire should be wired right back to the battery negative as per the instruction manual. In both our family problems this fixed it.
