Hi All

just trying to sort out what tyres to put on 80 series 96 factory turbo on 16"alloy rims?

It has 275/70-16 at present and have been told these are the correct size and so will leave spedo correct and are possibly most suited (one bloke recons if i change from these my fuel economy will suffer?)

But then i have been lead towards 265/75-16 which are roughly 15-20mm taller, have many more makes and tread patterns to choose from, have LT tyre in this size also, would be more readily avaiulable in more remote areas probably.

Vehical will be 60% bitumin but also possibly some gibber rock etc.
I am running Goodyeear MTR's on our main bush rig and love them, but apparently have now changed design so?? But feel they are a bit agresive / possibly bit moisy for the more on road 80 series.

I kind of like the look of the Bridgestone "694"in a LT 265/75 R16 with a high "123 (1550kg) load and "R"(170kmh) speed rating.

Comments on size and types best suited would be greatly appreciated.

Regards'GN

Most common size on cruisers is 285/75-16,
The new MTR's are ment to be quiter, have better wear and grip wet roads better.Very differant design to the old style MTR's.First reports ive read are very good.No first hand experiance with them though.

Hi Nick

How does the 285/75-16 compare to the others in total height?

I saw some new MTR's on a ute the other day at 13000km and would not of been road worthy, but has had a bit of a flogging.

I think you will find that 265/75X16 is the most common size on these vehicles and i would stick with that but it depends on the width of you rim. I have these on 7" rims but if you have 8" i think 285's would be safer but the speedo will be out.

I'm using D 694 Bridgestones on my 80 and the speedo and GPS are spot on.
This is my second set of 694's and the first ones gave me 92000 but I could have got another 10000 out of them (we were doing a big trip up north and I didn't want to risk them). Just finished a trip to the Flinders, Arkaroola, Dalhousie and across the Simpson which had everything from Gibbers to Sand Dunes and the D694's performed great.

Thanks Rodney

What size 694's are you running?
Are they LT type?

I am glad to get a possitive post for them as I like the look of them.

If you are worried/concerned about legality and/or fuel consumption, why don't you just have a look at the OEM tyre placard attached to your vehicle which will give you the EXACT tyre size applicable to said vehicle.

Otherwise its whatever 'floats your boat'

It should be inside the drivers side door jam, on the B pillar.

If you have a manual, go larger, because 5th is a little bit revvy for the t/d.....285 is a inch taller than either of the others, and within regulations. Friends of mine got rid of their Bridgestones because they made their cars squirmish on the bituman...694 a/t i believe they were, they tried all sorts of pressures, maybe it was a batch thing, as others here dont seem to have the same experience. The MTR is an agrerssive tyre, the new pattern is just as...i would recommend Cooper at without the warreny option, or Toyo is another great tyre...

I forget who it was,but someone on here, knew someone, who worked for Bridgestone and their advice was that the 694 will toughen up and lose the jelly blubber feel.
They toughened up and I have no complaints about the ride;)

I also have 275-70s on my 16" Sunraysias on my 80 series. I don't think you will have too many dramas finding tyres this size is most outback towns. They may not have 20 models to choose from, but you can never expect that no matter what size tyres you have. There should be more than enough models to choose from in this size at your local tyre places.

I have BFG all terrains (long trails, I believe). They have served me well so far on dirt roads, tracks etc, but nothing too extreme. At this point (about 40% tread left) I'd be happy to buy them again, but I have heard good reports about Toyos and wouldn't mind trying them out. They're not cheap though, unfortunately.

Obviously larger, heavier tyres and more aggressive patterns will all affect your fuel economy. I wouldn't want to move away from the stock overall diameter or your speedo will become inaccurate. Having a few extra choices isn't worth screwing with your speedo IMHO.

Why are you so interested in getting LT tyres? Possibly more likely to be available in remote areas? I really wouldn't be basing your tyre size/model choice on what you may or may not be able to get out in woop woop. At the end of the day if you need to throw another brand, or a 2nd hand tyre on to get you out of trouble, so be it. And knowing Murphy's Law quite well, if you purchase the most common model/size on the face of the planet or not, you can bet you bottom dollar that the mechanic at Birdsville would have just sold his last one in that size when you get there.

Anyway, that's my $0.02. Hope that helps.

Hi Lobster

much sence in reply

i like the LT rating as i feel it gives you a bit up your sleve for harsher conditions?

I recon the 265/75 at 808mm OD vs the 275/70 at 792mm should only change spedo by 2kmh at 100kmh.

I am planning on the bridge stone 694 LT in a 265/75 version at $280 ea???

Hi GN,

80 Series 1HZ Turbo Intercooled

285 75 16 LT Cooper ST's x 6

Speedo reads 95, GPS 100

So I just do 5kms under the speed limit.
