Hi Gramps
Yeah sounds a bit of an overkill alright.
Speer 30 cal 130 gr hollow point is quoted as having a sectional density .195 and ballistic coefficient of .263. these figures gives a round with a flat trajectory and bucks the wind well.
Made for varmint hunting in the US of A. very frangible projectile made to explode on impact, I have found even a blade of grass can make them do that, heard stories where they have if pushed to fast could explode in flight.
It is spectacular seeing a gull explode, I am not shooting these Black Backed Gulls in the air I should add.
I tried shooting a feral goose, a big old gander ,breast on, around 250 or so away, the projectile must have been exploding on the heavy layer of guard feathers that they have and all it did was sat him back on his butt, he would get up shake himself off, and I had another go, did that a couple of times more before he flew away.
I also have a.223 Browning LH as well, more designed for that type of thing, cheaper to reload with smaller quantities of ingredients, but not nearly as effective or versatile as the 30.06
