Hey there everyone you have all helped me with my previous question about schooling the kids while we travel so that is sorted now the tricky one....work! I know a lot of you dont need to look for work while travelling around Oz but I'm sure there are also some who do...so simple question is there plenty of casual work out there to be picked up by a couple of 35yr olds or do we need to be young blonde backpackers? Feedback of any kind appreciated
Thanx guys
Gemma

Gemma,

your skill set will have a lot to do with it. Always work about if you're prepared to do anything. Caravan parks are always after casuals for cleaning, yard work, reception etc. Very much seasonal. Also dependant on location. Usually a lot more work as you get further north and towards the west.

Without knowing your profession/trades have you thought of registering with the big employment contractors (Skilled for example) before you leave. The ESS mob that run many of the accomodation and catering centres at the mines throughout australia are another. A couple of ideas for you.

Cheers Mick

Where I work, a servo in Fitzroy Crossing, we will generally employ anyone.. it just depends on the time of year, who has quit recently, and how long you can stay for.. We prefer mature people, they are generally more reliable.. not always of course!!

Peak tourist season in the northern areas where tourists flock are usually looking for workers of all types. Eg last year i Kununurra, just about every shop window had workers wanted for all types of positions. Talking to anyone in town, from check out operators, caravan park cleaners, nurses and doctors; they were all living out of there caravans and 'on the road' - some with young children. In NT a lot of CPs had signage up, eg the nice CP near Bitter Springs - Mataranka Cabins and Camping had a sign up wanting a couple as park manangers when we were there a few weeks or so ago. Lots of places do. So long as you are prepared to clean toilets and empty bins, go to a place you like and ask.

Hi Gemma,

We are a family of 5 travelling oz (have been on the road since November 08) Matt is a mechanic and I am a massage therapist, at first I choose not to work as I was home schooling the kids - we stopped in Shepparton Vic for 3 mths and Matt worked as a Mech, he has also done fruit picking although this doesn't always pay too well and is HARD work.

We are currently in Kununurra WA and we are both working (as we still have site fee's to pay and with 3 kids this can get expensive) Matt is on the tools again and I am working in the caravan park as a cleaner/office assistant - we have put the kids in school here - they adjusted quite well and are enjoying the experience - we will stay here till December then move on to Broome.

There is work out there - it just depends on what you want to do (obviously I could get more money as a massage therapist, however at the moment this situation suits us better).

PS I am 40 this year and Matt is 38!!!

Cheers

Hi.We have just worked our way around Aus. Fruit picking hard work, never sure when what season was starting or how long the job would last. We used this option as a last resort.
I used preregistered with Skilled and Workpacand used them in larger centres with excellent results.
We also had laptops and a printer in the van..and I used to run off 10 or so "job letters" or letters of introduction and hand deliver them in smaller places and we always got work. I had good Public relations and retail,HR licence, Forklift licence and good machinery experience...I'd imagine with your hubbys trade he'll get work quite easily..not sure about the massage opportunities in smaller centres.
I personally found very few Motor Camps looking for workers etc..although everyone seemed to think they were always on the look out for staff.I wouldn't count on this option.
Cheers Gerard and Anne

Hi guys thanks for all the ideas - my husband also has good pr skills, forklift licence, HR llicence and is a qualified diesel mechanic so we figure it will be a lot easier for him to find work as we travel around. I have nurse's aide cert. and am not adverse to cleaning either but will probably be concentrating on home schooling. However we will both be getting RSA and RSG cert.before we go just in case.

Cheers

Hi all,
I'm in the process of organizing our trip around OZ with my wife and 2 young boys age 10 and 6 in Jan 2010 and was told by someone on the caravanners forum to go to my nearest tourist info center and grab a book called Harvest guide 2009 ,National harvest information service,
work your way around Australia, for Info call 1800 062 332,I have the 6th edition and its free ,it will tell you all about where /what and when will be going on around OZ ,for example go to W/A to Albany and Strawberry picking is in high demand in the months of Jan,Feb,Nov and Dec and in low demand from June to September,I think that this might be a good backup plan if you have not found anything else ,well I hope this might help a little and good luck but most of all have a ball I'm going to :)

Cheers.

Hi Gemma,

How about

Willing Workers On Organic Farms ?

Have not tried it myself, but know someone who has, said it was great. You work generally 4 hours per day for 4 days a week for meals and lodging.

Regards, John.
