Hi all.
We're heading off to the wildflowers in 10 days so I got out the Primus 12v shower today to check it. Guess what it's all corroded up and won't run - second time this has happened and this this one has additional sealing with silicone. Tomorrow I'll go off and buy a 12v bilge pump and couple it up with the existing hose, shower rose etc.,cost should only be a little more than a complete new shower but much better quality. We used bilge pumps in one of the big shoppoing centres to hand water from 500l tanks on motor bike trailers and they worked liked dreams.

Does anyone see any problems with this idea.

John

Be cheaper to go to Jaycar or similar and buy the complete shower pump, hose, rose and waterproof switch and lead for $19. They are all plastic so no corrosion, provide a good shower without excessive water usage. Just mix water in abucket to desired temp, plug the fag plug into vehicle and away you go.

Hi Peter

That is the same as what I had but in all of them the motor has copper wiring and is encased in metal. That is where the corrosion was. Sealing is never very good in these and over a period of time with frequent use water gets into the motor.

We bought a yellow coloured plastic shower the same sold on E Bay & at Jaycar. Have used it for 5 years & still going strong. Thought I would lash out last year and buy a Primus and wasn't happy took it back found a Coleman Hotwater on demand on special in K Mart & thought we would try that. We run our water through the Coleman into a 10 ltr bucket to the temp we want. Place the bucket in the shower tent and plug the shower into our 12volt car starter unit (purchased 9 years ago at Super Cheap) as you shower you can see the water diminish so you know when to finish up rinsing or whatever. With the Coleman, someone has to remain outside the shower tent because we have found the water will deviate in temp. sometimes & is either to hot or cold to shower under. Obviously the Coleman is a large unit & takes up valuable space if you are travelling in remote areas you wouldn't take it. I have made two Galv, buckets one 12 ltrs the other 10ltrs. one fits inside the other, place them by the fire & get water hot is another option or boil the kettle!!. The $20 shower is a beauty & if worried, carry two. Saw one on E Bay last week for $5.

I had te same problem years ago when those kits first came out. I bought a 450GPH bilge pump and was disappointed with its performance. Seems like it was a high volume, low pressure pump and didn't pump very well against the restriction of a shower head. It was still good enough for a shower, but didn't provide as good a head of pressure as the primus or jaycar pumps.

So I do what Peter does - just throw away the $20 Jaycar pumps when they fail. The one I have at present has lasted a couple of years. Funny thing is that if the pump fails on a trip, just use a cup to scoop the water for your shower - actually seems to work better!
