Hi Gang,
I have finally procured a roof rack for the Cruiser and I am thinking about some sort of lift to raise it off the car to hang on the ceiling. Before I start drilling holes in my garage ceiling and moving fluoros, does anyone have a similar system that works. I would appreciate some advice and pics if possible.

Thanks, Steve

Used a very similar system for years at a previous address.

I now use the same winch to get push bikes of the floor and out of the way.

cheap boat winch dyna bolted to garage wall and flag pole pulleys mounted to wall and ceiling, and two webbing slings with 4 snap hooks bought into one central lifting point, works a treat.

G'day, I have bought one of these, plan to install it in the ceiling above the garage, cable thru the ceiling, attached to the roof rack and then a couple of eye bolts each side, ratchet strap to hold it in place. Should work..........

Sort of like crackles has done, but without the winch.

I have the joists exposed under the house, so I put in a couple of bolts, and tie off the front with a bit of rope, then lift the rear and tie off as well.

That is the full length aluminium roof rack, it weights about 15 kg empty (lighter than a full jerry of fuel) and I can carry it around without any hassles.

Like John C said
Had the boat winch in the roof bit but found two bits of rope just as effective and cheaper. Other way is buy four reasonable ractchet tie downs (bought 4 from bunnings for under $40) and use one in each corner. A bit more mucking around but gives you full control of the descent when you want to put it back on. Use a small step ladder to give you the height to use the tiedowns.

Yes I have done it (twice) and it works a treat, use steel cables and pulley's from a yacht supplies shop, quick connect clips and D shackles and a boat winch. The cable from the winch to the first shackle is the original boat wich cable and needs to be long enough to get the roof rack to the desired hieght, then with d shackles split it into 4 smaller cables one to each corner, use timbles and two cable clamps per end.

Drive under hook the cables (four) on with quick connect links, undo the bolts securing the roof rack and slowly winch it up, you need someone to steady it as you can never get the car in the perfect spot and as it goes up the legs will want to drag across the roof until it centres under the hoist. When its all the way up I put a saftey chain onto each corner.

I'll try to get some pic's for you later today.
