I'm looking to upgrade my car to a AWD/4WD used for the following:
1. Towing a small caravan that sleeps 4 - maybe a Windsor Rapid or Adria Altea.
2. Light offroad
Mandatory requirements are side curtain airbags and automatic. Budget is around $35k. Diesel preferred and under 100,000kms if not a full blown 4WD. Unfortunately, Drive/Trading Post/Car Sales don't seem to have these options to search under!
I'm open to other suggestions, but a few that spring to mind:
- diesel Xtrail
- Patrol (do these come with curtain airbags?)
- Pathfinder
- Prado (which year/models come with curtain airbags?)
- Forester / Outback
- Hilux/Navarra (do these come with curtain airbags?)
- Disco

Pajeros with family pack (NS?) would fit your criteria

Diesel Automatic Xtrail had its towing capacity downgraded to only 1350kg because the auto box (which is not the CVT) can't handle the torque. The power was also reduced from 127Kw to 110Kw.
Cross it off the list!

Try a Holden (Daewoo?) Captiva Diesel, garbage. I've got a manual as work car. 600kms City from 65l
tank, up around 800km highway at 110km/h with A/C flat out. Towing is 2000kg manual, 1800kg(?) auto. Has been very reliable over 60000km. I would however prefer the auto for laziness. All airbagged up and with the special deals at the moment should be in your price range.
Cheers
Col

Why not try a Ford
Ranger 4x4 XLT 5sp auto 3.0l diesel? Just got
mine (2008 model 18,000 k's on the clock) for a bit over $40,000 and love it. It has a towing capacity of 1800kgs with standard hitch and 2500kgs with weight distribution hitch.
