Hi all, does anyone know the what the law is about having the LED clearance lights on side and front of vehicle. Many people have them and was just wondering how legal they are. Seen some tonight,
orange lights on front of vehicle, i thought you were only allowed to have white lights facing forward and red facing behind.
Anyone know, as i wanted to fit 2 small white LED lights to front of my bull bar to be used as
park lights instead of my dull parkers. Also when people run the
orange lights down the running boards of there car is that legal? I dont wanna turn my car into a truck and get called a tosser, just want better looking
park lights.
Cheers all.

Hi Kroozer,
Best check with the Licencing Authority over your way.
Here in Vic. it is basically white or
orange to the front (white for headlights obviously) and red to the rear.
Orange also for side clearance lights facing the front but red to the rear.
There is also a rule that
parking lights can be no more than 7 watts so that is one that can catch people out.
Regards SB.

led's are legal if they are to australian standard, most trucks now run led outline/clearance and tail lights due to them being more reliable and less current draw.
I use the led's in my parkers. You will see how they stand out in the photo.

They are 19 led lamps with all the led's faceing forward, bought them off ebay and have had no troubles with them at all.
I run all led's on my caravan including the clearance and outline lights although they are all hellas.
Have a good one

A vehicle under 2200mm width (?? from memory) does not require "clearance" lights at all.
Cheers,
Peter

In NSW the vehicle has to be 2200mm wide before it can have the roof mounted clearance lights, not totally sure about the running lights down the side however they are very specific in the height/distance apart and colour. From memory it is in schedule 4 of the Road Transport (Veh registration) act.

The colours have been stated but just make sure that any side clearance lights are mounted higher than 600mm from the ground. My neighbour got a canary for side clearance lights on his Hilux (very tidy) last month and was ordered to remove them all.
When he questioned it at the
Police station later..the Sgt laughed and couldnt believe he had been defected for it and would get the over zealous constable to contact him. Came to his house and measures them all and the two on his running boards were below 600mm so he eventually got him for it. All the other ones (3) on the side boards of the tray were acceptable (above 600mm).
When the vehicle was taken over the pits the next week...all the inspectors were called out to see the vehicle that got a defect for clearance lights. They though it was a joke and cleared the vehicle in minutes.
Whats legal and enforced in WA all depends on the officer on the day!
Just look around at all the illegal HIDs we have running around!

You can buy LED units to replace existing globes in white amber red.
Here are the white ones. Just plug'm in to your existing light assemblies.
