Garmin GPS topos card

I have a Garmin Nuvi 265 and puchased the topos card for it which is supposed to give all the tracks etc in Aus such as the canning stock route etc etc. When I bought it I made the sales guy ring Garmin to make sure I was getting what I wanted and all was good.

I am currently up on Cape York and wanted the programme to get me there as I was doing the old telegraph track. I have found the programme to be absolutely useless in that it shows virtually nothing more than the standard GPS does. It didn't even show the track at all. Occasionally it showed the main road but usually shadowing where I actually were. It showed none of the side tracks or roads and none of any of the attractions. In fact even Cooktown only showed as a main street. I feel I have totally wasted 200 odd bucks and am very disappointed. Has anyone else found the same or is it just me? There were no instructions with it so I assume it is plug and play. Cheers

Could be something wrong. My Nuvi 5000 as standard shows all the streets in Cooktown. Even the CREB road and Bloofield road when we went along them last week.

Hi, I haven't got the topo maps but there was a thread not so long ago saying that the detail was not flash and Garmin were doing an update next year. Do a search on past threads.

Cheers

It's not exactly plug and play as such. Do you have the topo maps actually selected to display on your unit?
I'm not sure about the Nuvi 265, but on the 760 from the main menu screen touch Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info. There you select Topo Australia and deselect City Navigator. If you don't deselect City Navigator, I think it will over-ride Topo Australia.
The streets of Cooktown are definitely shown (and named), I have just checked this on my own Nuvi 760.

Cheers

I will try all that but have spent some time playing with it and no good so far. If that is the case why don't they give instructions on how to use it. It would be in there best interest I'm sure. Come to think of it there were virtually nill instructions when I bought the GPS in the first place. Had to get the manual off the net. In any case as Stephen says below the maps are definitely out. Many times I was driving alongside the road as shown on the screen

That definitely is an 90% improvement. Cannot understand why Garmin wouldn't tell you that simple instruction. Will try it on the road and see how we go.

I just looked at base camp and the details are awesome . Every track and stream and road etc . Did you go into the settings and untick the standard map or topo wont show up as it doesnt overlay . The unit only displays one or the other map .

To all of the above
You are all on the wrong wave length. I sell the product, know how to use them and they are a just that far out, it is not funny. Sure you will see all the tracks, rivers, contours etc when you have a play with the maps, but take them bush and they are OUT - End of story. I have 3 GPS Units set up side by side when I travel, and the only one that was spot on was the one that had Shonky running, as well as my laptop running Ozi and the Natmap series.

Cheers

Hi Kirk
You should have read my post a couple of weeks ago when we returned from a great trip through the Great Victoria Desert. We have had the same problem that any person that has purchased the Garmin Topo Australia maps will have - they are a complete waste of money and any person that has purchased them should be given a FULL REFUND!. We sell them at my work, I also rang our Garmin Rep, and like any good rep, said that the Garmin product that he sells and promotes was the ants pants. How wrong they are. I have sent emails to my rep and also Garmin, requesting a full refund. I was using it in conjunction with the free to download Shonky Maps, that could not be faulted.

As I also do freelance mapping for a Major Map maker here in Australia, I am fully qualified to comment, even offering Garmin at no charge, my correctly recorded track files to show them just how far they are out. True to form and nearly one month later, my only reply was last week by telephone from our rep saying that there is going to be a major upgrade in 2010, but could not make any comments about my request.

I am now giving full praise to the Hema Navigator. One of the other vehicles in my group was running one and it left the Garmin Topo Australia in its wake.

Again my advise for any person that is thinking of purchasing the Garmin Topo Australia, is DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNT MONEY, download the free Shonky Maps and you will not go wrong.

I am sorry that you to have had this issue, when you get home, my advise is send Garmin a email, also requesting a full refund and take it back to the place where you were sold a product that does not meet the Garmin Standard and request a FULL REFUND.

Cheers

Thanks for that. The Garmin site does not show an email address but I will be ringing them on Monday and I will be seeking a full refund. I will try the things mentioned above in the mean time.

Thanks for all responses.

Hi Kirk
All we can do is let Garmin know how faulty their product is. I still have not had any offer of full refunds or to obtain my data so their cartographers can overlay the data that they have and the correct that I have collected and is used to map maps with. Also below is the email address so you can also send your complaint, but do not hold your breath for a reply, which is extremely disappointing from a company that sells top GPS Units.

Here is one for you to sent to:

Australasia.Support@Garmin.com

Cheers

Hi Shaker
The details below are the settings for my Nuvi 5000, but have been assured by our Garmin Rep, that it is the same for any Nuvi unit that will accept an SD Card for extra mapping details.

Turn your unit On

Go to "Tools"

Then "Settings"

Then "Maps"

Then "Map Info"

One the next page, you will see two Green Ticked Boxes

"Shonky Topo" and "City Nav Aust and NZ NT 2009"

Untick the "City Nav" and the Shonky should be the only Green tick showing.

Then Press the "Back" tab a few times and it will bring you back to the main page again and the Shonky Maps will now be the only maps displayed..

I would like to make it clear here again, that in towns and places where there are streets, The Garmin Topo Australia is just as good as the Standard maps installed in the unit as standard.

People like me buy the "Topo" maps to use in places that are out of the "Norm" places to go to and this is where they fall down badly.

If you want to download the Free Shonkymaps, just go a Google and follow the prompts.

I hope that this sort it out for you.

Cheers

Stephen

I have a topo map set also running on a Nuvi 250 which is good in some places and very bad in others.

What I cannot understand is that the map set is supposed to be supplied by Hema.

All I can say is that Hema must have supplied very old maps.

On the Donahue I was consistently driving"cross country" as the road alignment was off the screen. from Longreach to Rocky, the route appeared to be via Townsville.

However in the GRR it was spot on, as it was all the way down the coast road of WA. It also showed minor tracks off the Plenty and Tanami.

Maybe because I only have a 250, I find the street maps quicker in town. ie they say to turn at a roundabout before the roundabout, not after.

I also would like to see a much more accurate set.
