After reading Thread 72247 Medivac on Eyre Hwy
I have been trying to find a map, wed site, or any info on the RFDS Emergency road air strip location, here in WA and other states.
I have driven over many over the years the last two on the Great Central Hwy, some in the NW and of cause the one on the Eyre Hwy (cross it over 50 times now).
I've tried searching the RDFS
web site MRWA
web site plus Google
If anyone can find some info could they please post it as it would be good info to have
Regards
Richard

Hi Richard
There was a bit on TV last night (about police force) anyway I gather the RFDS planes can land on any suitable part of a highway as long as it is wide enough once
marker post are removed....I am not 100% on this

There are actually marked strips on the highway up the centre and in more than one place if I remember correctly.
Usually on long straight stretches LOL
Richard I ducked out of Queensland the short way so none between Bribie and Coolangatta.
I went to
Cairns a few years ago and people assured me the road wasnt fit for
cars never mind aeroplanes.

I didn't see the show, but I found this on the RDFS web site.
which is great info, and I for one will be marking a file of this for my travels.
But I was thinking that if you new the location of the permanent strips, that in an emergency you could look up how far away you are from one and start to and then start to enact a plain recovery or something

I guess you didnt really read them then. and you missed the point so I wont bother - you did ask for " any info on the RFDS Emergency road air strip location, here in WA" so I gave you the two official sites that contain them
why bother asking

Sorry aroundwego
I may not have asked for what I meant, what I was after was a list of location of pre-made air strips either dirt or bitumen, as in on a map, gps cords, or whereabouts.
Please don't get upset, I was glad that you replied if I missed your point please re point it out for me to see, thats way I asked.
Thanks

They close the gates on one of the islands in Tonga as
well. The plane lands on one side of the island and turns around on the other side.

Richard,
not answering your question but there are road strips in Qld. One that comes to mind is near
Gregory downs. That is probably there because of the black soil.
I have seen the RFDS doing touch and goes in the RAAF king air a couple of times just checking out the remote strips.
Some of those are not level and quite short.
Have a good one

Richard.
The one Rockape refers to is east of
Gregory Downs towards Burke & Will Roadhouse. The strip is wide butumen and is used when the
Gregory Downs strip is too wet. The strip is long and wide with instructions for vehicles at each end.

Nice little strip at
Forrest and from memory a goodun at
EMU and also the rock formations on the AB, about 25Kms West from
Neale Junction. Problem is whether RFDS will land there? Perhaps they have a schedule of servicable strips where they will land?? Cheers.

Australia.
I'm still waiting for a return phone call on the matter from the RFDS it's only 6 hrs..

Richard,
I am not sure that that information for the whole of the country would be held in one location.
Having been involved in Emergency Management in regional NSW I know that the suitability of airstrips/landing sites was constantly under review. Pilots would update each other on the suitability of strips in use.
I do know the pilots were a lot more reluctant than most people think to land on anything other than a known strip. Frequently strips were removed from the list until specific maintenance was carried out. For this reason I think you would more likely obtain the information by contacting each RFDS base and asking about a list for the area they service. Alternatively try Emergency Management
Australia, they have a web site, might be worth a look.
On the Barrier Highway a number of private strips adjoining the road were being upgraded to provide better access to strategic areas. Seeing a light plane land on one of these strips while I drove along the highway was a bit un-nerving, I felt he was landing on my head.

I tried giving RFDS a call at JANDAKOT (BASE) and they haven't got back to me so far, I will chase them up tomorrow.
The main strips I am referring to are the one layed into the main roads around
Australia, they would be built be the Road departments or shires of each state, and only in the bigger and remote states eg. Qld, WA, SA and maybe NSW.
I will give the Main Roads WA a call as well
Thanks again

Richard

Richard,
I am pretty sure there are none in NSW.
At the meetings I attended it was talked about but the decision was made to use and upgrade private strips close to the road. This was so the landholder got some benefit and then shared the responsibility for maintenance.
The other issue with using the road was providing lighting. On the private strips they place and leave in place trays for fires to light the strip but on a road these trays were considered a
hazard and would have to be set out and removed for each use.
As I said earlier this was all managed through Emergency Management perhaps the information you are looking for would be available through Emergency Management
Australia or Emergency Management WA

I did get a small list from the RFDS here at Jandakot WA.
they are at
Agnew
Balladonia
Eucla
Madura No.1
Madura No.2
Nanutarra
Sandstone
These are all MRWA
This is not the full info of the letter as "Privacy laws prohibit the distribution"
If you have an emergency while on the road, call our emergency number 1800 625 800 and the Operator will guide you to the
airstrip that will be used. As explained over the phone, the Emergency Road Landing Strips are not used unless their is no other option and travelling to one with an injured patient in the hope of being airlifted may not be the best course of action.
I thanks all of you who replied and where helpfull.
