G'day All,

Was wandering if anyone knows of any good camping spots for over the Cup Weekend and possibly a bit longer.

2 Adults and 2 Kids (2.5 & 5). Have a 4WD but standard 6 x 4 trailer. Would love a spot to be able to take my son's new little Quad we got him for his b'day next week. Possible by a river so I can have a drink and do a spot of fishing. The more remote the better, don't really want to be camping on top of people.

Thanks

I know there is a great little spot being used by a few EO folk the weekend after the Melbourne Cup at the Pyrenees ;)

Staying at the Glenpatrick campsite/reserve.

Between Avoca and Arat.

Check out the Members Trips and Gatherings for details on the Upcomming Gathering. Or for check out my Blog I wrote after attending last years Gathering. It is a long way from Central Queensland but it is a great place to relax and mix with like minded folk ;)

"Would love a spot to be able to take my son's new little Quad we got"
You'd be looking for a camp on some private property somewhere Bruce as an unregistered quad bike is obviously not allowed in either State Forrests or National Parks. Police & Parks officers patrol heavily over the Melb Cup weekend.

Hi Sal & Bruce

The same reccomendation I gave to Greg would apply in this situation , that is Talbotville.
For kids you would be best to go about 300m south of main camp entrance across the first river crossing, and veer left into a flat area of about 20 acres.

Not quite as nice there but keeps the quad noise down and away from other campers.

You also get a timely view of whats approaching to keep kids safe.

River crossing probably 600-700mm at that time.

G'day Robin,

Thanks are you able to email me further details.

bruceandsally@optusnet.com.au. Sounds great but the river crossing could be a problem, only have a standard 6 x 4 trailer and my 4WD does not have a snorkel (yet)..

Hi Bruce

Certainly help al I can , I'll put a few notes here now , I don't know how much you know the area , but don't hesitate to ask.

Talbotville , is the centre of a huge camping / driving area in east victoria 40 mins west from the township of Dargo , it can be Acessed from the north via a scenic drive past Mt Hotham ski resort.

The place itself really has got the lot, its down a steep spectacular , but still 2wd dirt road in a river valley. On entry there is about 20 acres of flat camping land and its state forest just there and dogs & fires are allowed. Its outer boundry is the crooked river and while you have no rivers to cross to camp here , going beyond the river is via river crossing and takes you into a wonderland of tracks more rivers and many more camping areas.
Couple of drop loo's , and plenty of clear (cold) water in the various rivers.

We have taken the kids & bikes there for 10 years but now they are 18 and ride to fast for us. Is a dumb world that doesn't provide for proper riding opportunites for Kids so you take your chances, with the other that will be there.

The map to get is called Rpptop'sDargo - Wonnangatta adventure map

Its a great 1cm to the kilometer map showing all you need from Mt Hotham to the princess highway , but they also make a more detailed one just for the area.

The actual area is also called the Grant historic area from the gold mining days and there are even safe mines to take people for a scary walk into.

Costs nothing by the way.

Thanks alot Robin,

It sounds great, I don't know the area at all. My main camping spots are up at the Murray to go water skiing.

Would be good to cross the river to get a spot on our own, just depends on who comes with us not everyone that would come has a 4WD, that being said I haven't done any 4WD in our's yet either.

Does that map show how to get to comp spots etc.

Thanks again

Bruce

You certainly can , I have had a bit of a go at it and it works but I personnally prefer the Garmin system I have as many maps aren't optimize for smaal screens and detail can be hard to follow.

Remember it is unlawful to ride a Quad on public land in Victoria unless it is registered with a rec-vehicle rego and the rider is licensed. Fines are around $600 for the unlicensed operator and $600 for the unregistered vehicle.

Ok I get the point re the Quad, the fines seem a bit ridiculous for a 5 yr old kid but anyway that's the way it is.

Any suggestions should we not take his quad, not 100% sure it will all fit in the trailer anyway.

Thanks

Bruce.
