Hi there to everyone out there enjoying the
camping life.
We are currently in
Carnarvon and looking to move on, hopefully to somewhere not so windy!! (maybe not possible at this time of the year??). Have read a few old posts (back in 2003) about a spot on the Ashburton River near
Onslow - has anyone been there recently and if so, can you provide an update please?

Thanks for
the tip New Boy. Wouldn't want to come face to face with one of them. Did read a few threads about it and the general discussion on whether they are this far south or not.

A couple of years ago yeah. There were a few caravans along the river and the gen was that you needed permission from the station but you can check that out in town.
I liked
Onslow because it's off the beaten track and still a dumpy sort of place with nothing flash about it. real country pub and the caravan
park was friendly. You get some dedicated amatuer fishers that hire a cabin and tow the boat up but they wont be happy if it is blowing a lot.
the old town (abandoned) seems to interest those who like picking up bits of broken old rubbish and there is the old police post complete with lock up.
I wonder if the pressure is off the caravan parks now that the season is moving on. I hated travelling up the coast last time.

Thanks for that, might check out the town before heading to the
camp site on the river. Maybe the caravan
park is another option. Anywhere out of this wind! Hubby has had the tinnie off the roof for 3 weeks but no hope of putting it in at
Carnarvon - 40km wind gusts today, yesterday, day before.......probably tomorrow.
We are working a couple of days a week at present in the caravan
park here in
Carnarvon and the place is slowing emptying out. Just the last stragglers coming down from the north and hoping the weather down south improves before they keep going. Strong head winds don't make the drive south something to look forward to

Spent last 2 yrs in
Carnarvon working before finishing last December so know all about the 40 knots southerlys there a bit early usualy dont start in earnest till Oct you must be lucky this year LOL.
If you get a chance explore some of the creeks south of the Small
boat harbour need to go on a rising tide and be out before it falls so much amazing sealife in the shallows Dugongs,Rays Turtles and small sharks .

Was going to ask you if you had any "secret spots" LOL around
Carnarvon for a fish. We took a drive this arvo out near the racecourse/golf course to a bit of land that sticks out in amongst the
mangroves - Dave's gone back now to try a few squiggies and see if he can get a flattie or two. They don't seem to rate flathead in this town but we love them for a feed. Are driving down to Bush Bay/New Beach tomorrow to check that out. But have looked around Oyster
Creek, which I think is the area you are talking about - and yes you need a 1.5m tide, but there isn't one until December I think!

Hi
Sorry but its windy in
Onslow too! Worst than that the old
Onslow site on the Ashburton River isnt worth
camping at as one of the mines is working just over the river and you cant sit out of the dust anywhere, not to mention the noise of the haul trucks.

Hi Sue, sounds like you are in
Onslow at the moment, so thanks for the update! Mmmm, maybe I'll look elsewhere for a quiet
camp spot out of the wind. Wish me luck!

You have to pass the
campsite on the Ashburton to get to
onslow, on your way into
onslow where you turn off the ashburton bridge is just up the road, turn left just over the bridge and you will find any amount of
camping spots, if you have a 4wd it's worth going right down to the mouth, good fishing there as
well, then you can take the track up through old
onslow to the town itself.

camped at
three mile pool for 3 days back in july. Beaut spot, not much bother from the
mine only a few cars passing down the track in morning and at knockoff time. Wind blew dust away from
camp then. Pays to take some ant dust for around caravan plenty of ants.
Well worth a visit.

Thanks for all the info. It's been great. I think in the end we'll just have to head up that way and check it out for ourselves!
