Howdy

I have two hiking tents, one is an MSR Zoid 2 and the other is a Cross-Fire Bivvy bag..

I've walked extensively with both. I have found the MSR good for comfort and size and although billed as a two person tent, it would be two smaller people, or an adult and child.

I've just completed a ten day walk and used the Bivvy bag on this trip, and as you would expect this is a one person bag only. However, it is constructed to military specs, and is fully breathable making it a good alternative. At the price it is worth looking at even if you need to get two, as they are very light and small in the pack.

Good luck....

Have a look at Anaconda. They have a range of hiking tents by Denali. I have a one and a two man variety, X-wind and Zephyr are the model names I think. Good design, very lightweight and a lot cheaper. Have used them fairly heavily and had no issues with them. Very well made. The best thing is that Anaconda have their sales and you can often pick them up at half price or more off.

Cheers Mick

I agree, Anaconda has a great range of tents & camping gear. Another place worth having a look at is Kathmandu, they have a lot of camping stuff designed for backpackers and hikers so it is light weight and is usually good quality.

There are plenty of good quality backpacking tents around and plenty of cheapo rubbish.

How much to spend will depend on how much backpacking you wish to do and where you want to go.

If you want a tent to last a long time and/or you wish to travel above the snowline in summer or winter and want a quality lightweight tent, you will pay a considerable amount of coin for one.

Whilst I haven't been that prolific in lightweight camping recently (kids), I have a Black Diamond small two person tent that I bought for cycle touring and it is very small and lightweight, but not so flash above the snowline in winter, due to the way the poles are fitted into the tent. I also have a tent that I bought from Kathmandu many years ago which I have found brilliant. It is a Wild Country tent, 2 person, with 4 criss-crossing poles. It has had a bucket load of use and I have camped on the Main Range up near Kosi in the Winter and had to sit out a blizzard for 3 days and it was as strong as.

The BD tent was about $220 and the Wild Country one was about $600 from memory and that was about 15 years ago. You won't get good quality cheap, trust me.

The three brands you have mentioned are all serious lightweight tents and not cheapo taiwanese rubbish.

Cheers,

Mark
