Hi,

Have just purchased a G6E falcon on LPG which runs of the old BA 4 speed. I have just purchased a new Jayco Expanda that will have a GVM of around 2 tonne by the time i get all my gear into it. I am thinking of traveling from Melbourne to Brisbane and do a few shorter trips on a regular basis.

Can anyone advise if they recommend me installing a transmission cooler or should i just get my transmission serviced annually??

You should do both ideally.

The BTR/Ion electronic 4 speed auto in the Falcon doesn't like being overheated, especially when being loaded up. I know the new Falcons have a heat exchanger type arrangement as a factory trans cooler, but it is still an oil-coolant deal which has the potential to be a weakness. I have heard of some BF Falcons with the same cooler having the dreaded cross contamination issue of engine coolant getting into the trans fluid and you know what that means...

My advice would be to get rid of the standard unit and fit a normal stand alone trans cooler that is air cooled. PWR make a generic 6cyl kit which is perfect for the job and I got my kit from Repco for $129. Any 6cyl or V8 Falcon running the 4 speed should get one fitted, regardless of whether you're towing or not.

And service the trans regularly. Every 40,000klm ideally. Take what the owner's manual says about the trans being "sealed for life" and "doesn't need checking" with a pinch of sh*t.

Be careful about modifying the existing trans oil cooler arrangement, as your car is still under the manufacturers warrenty.

The FG G6E is a beautiful car, (I have an FG XR6 6 speed/auto) but I shake my head why Ford still fits the vapour LPG system and the shonky old 4 speed clunker auto box to the FG. I don't think their resale in that LPG/AUTO configuration is gunna be terrific.

thanks for the reply gents. Agree about the re-sale on the car however i do 40k a year on the road hence the reason for the LPG. Don't loose that much power and will adequately tow my van so there is therein lies the reason for this model. I will investigate the air cooled option. Any other ideas will be appreciated.
