Hi, traveled from
Perth to
Paynes find Ninghan station on weekend looking at the magnificent wild flowers. Had great trip...from
Dalwallinu onwards it's lovely and the last 50km into
Paynes find we took literally hundreds of photos.Ninghan is good, and the 4WD track upto the top of Mount
Singleton was interesting and relatively easy. Onthe way home we detoured down the
rabbit proof fence road to the corner of
Wubin East road and saw a good strip of wreath flowers.
GPS coords: S30.10749 E116.89355.
We were puzzled by the occasional "nest"we saw. They were a round depression in the red sand, with a hole in the bottom...and lots of small dry leaves stuck around the top. they were about the size of a large dinner plate..any ideas?
Cheers
Gerard

I don't know..the dried leaves were "stuck" onto the top rim very neatly and quite firmly. The hole in the bottom has me puzzled. It seemed way to be for ants etc.Maybe it's a built in malle fowl dunny?
I'd post a photo, but I'm only a registered visitor and not a member.

Hi Gerard
If they look like below, they are spinifex ants nests.
Cheers

Thats it. Many thanks. It was the size of the nest that had me bamboozled. It looked way to big for an ants nest.
