Hi all,

a certain Mr. is having a birthday soon, I've got a few ideas..and was wondering are all the 4wd stores basically the same.i.e sell the same stuff at the same quality or are there some better than the others...ones I know about are 4wd Superstore, ARB, Opposite Lock, are there any others that anyone can recommend in Melbourne, preferably west or north but it doesn't matter..

cheers

It can vary WIDELY.

Even between different ARB stores. ARB stores or even stockests.

ARB are pretty good, but tend to be on the high side of prices.

Haven't had much to do with Opposite Lock, but heard good reports.

The good thing about the Superstores or Megastores is you tend to be able to get a variety of the same product for comparisons and pricing.

Mrs Al, not sure but if any of them have read what you intend or have purchased for Mr Al, they should send a cab around to pick you up. Sorry, not correct that should read send a limo around complete with wine etc.

Happy shopping

Mark

G'day Mrs Al,

A certain Mr got very excited when I showed him my Magellan 330 GPS. Now this one may not be in a birthday budget but there is now a Garmin Geko GPS on the market ( refer to article in 4x4 Monthly Oct 03) which may send him into orbit.

Cheers,

Willie

G'day Mrs Al,

I guess if your just after a straight purchase of an item it doesn't really matter where you buy it - price is often the sole determining factor.

Conversely there are lots of other considerations if your after service or installation of said goods.

Not all stores will be the same - even same name, such as ARB etc will differ from store to store on this front, and it's often wise to go on recommendations.

For example, I had a very poor time with an Oppostite Lock store once - bought a bit over $1000 bucks worth of CB and console gear. Well the owner of the store advised me that ground plane was not important for UHF, and insisted on installing my UHF arial on a conventional mount on my bullbar. Told me that ground plane independant antennas are not important. Also said that SWR is not important for AM CB's, and that

"we haven't SWR'd a CB in twenty years - nobody does that anymore...."

....apart from that - the installation was very shoddy...stray silicone, self tappers screwed into little bits of tin chopped from a milo tin lid to hold the radio in.....Radio and console fell off on the first trip - and despite them "fixing it" I still had to reinstall the whole lot myself :-)

...not saying all Opposite Locks are bad - just that the anntena theory and workmanship of this particular store in the North of Melbourne was very bad at that time :-)

Thanks Luke...

I think I know the store, bought the Ruggered Tool Roll there..and the guy was helpful, VERY helpful, but maybe he doesn't get too many women through the door, seemed surprised I knew what I was talking about...:)

As far as getting Al stuff that requires installation, I wouldn't bother..I'd let him do that...it's gets too technical for me and my eyes begin to spin in my head...and I understand that these stores are I guess franchises...

from my discreet enquiries last night with the lad..I've determined he would dearly love a maglight and a highlift jack...so I shall do some research on both of those..and my mate Jim is helping me out too :)))

thanks for your imput, very helpful...

cheers
