Als gone fishin
Hi readers, I have posted this issue before with many helpful replies. To refresh your memories, 2000 Model HZJ105R, 5 speed manual. When vehicle just, and I mean only just, starts to labour it begins to 'shudder', or maybe slight 'kangaroo hop'. By accelerating the shudder dissapears, or by dropping back a gear the shudder disappears. Since my last post I have replaced injectors and had Injector pump fully serviced. It is definetly not a fuel issue. One of the original replies indicated they had similar problem and it was in the gear box? Would appreciate feedback.

How does the clutch feel when you're starting off from a standstill, does it judder. A lot of Landcruisers have a bad clutch judder, mainly the diesels. Just a thought that it could be a clutch related problem, maybe even a leaking engine rear main seal putting a small amount of oil on the flywheel, just enough to cause a judder when under load.
Just a thought on something that might be worth looking at.

Hi Al, We just bought our 99 model T/D two weeks ago and it does the exact same thing ! Not a huge shudder but almost like small bunny hops.
Wasn't sure if it was just me, being a new car thought i just had to get used to the gears. Hopefully it's nothing too major.

That would be an aftermarket Turbo on a 1HZ motor.

Yes Kev, was put on at 160,000kms. Is now at 200,00. We only just purchased the car so cant tell whether it did it before or not.

Hi Al,
My '99 105 series does the same thing - always has. It just doesn't like being loaded at low revs, especially when I'm towing. I quite often have to go to third towing through towns at 50.
I have known other 'cruisers to do it also, especially with the 1HZ motor. Don't think there's much you can do about it unfortunately.
Personally, I haven't worried about it, but if you find a solution, I'd be interested.
Cheers
Gerry

Thanks Gerry, issue has only been effecting vehicle in last 3 months or so and I have owned vehicle from new, I am very persistant so when I find the problem I will definetely share it with you. Have checked obvious things, clutch, engine and gearbox mounts,
suspension and trailer arm bushes, tail shaft universals. I was told by one Deisel Mechanic that he thought the issue may lie within the transmission. I can't understand what could cause this if it was the transmission. Anyway I shal carry on regardless.
Cheers Al

This is a pure case of PEBSAS, to fix the problem either sell the car and buy a automatic, or hand in your license.
PEBSAS = Problem Exists Between
Seat And Steering Wheel.

No I own a 100 series cruiser, I should also have put a LOL after my post.
Have you put a new clutch in lately??
You could also have the fly wheel machined, these models are know to have clutch shudder when the clutch is fading.

Guess I should have too. LOL, there it is. New Clutch 60,000ks ago, no clutch shudder, just this rediculous 'bunny hop' thing.

Perhaps ask if they machined the fly wheel when they changed it, this is a must.

Gday...
I had always had either Cruisers or HiLux .... loved em. Until I got me a 100 Series non-turbo diesel.
It had the shudder you talk of and the Toyota mob could not find it - or even agree it existed for 12 momths. I believed it was in the clutch finally.
Like the advice above, I sold the cruiser and bought a Hyundai CRDi Terracan Auto.
Now done 45,000km absolutely faultlessly - the best fourby I have had. Have taken it everywhere I took the 100 series and it love it.
Terracan tows heaps better than the 100 series non-turbo.
Sounds like the 100 series diesels have a shudder built in !
Cheers

Hey Sir Kev, Yes changed oils about 15,000ks ago, thinking back it almost coincides with the symptoms starting, what can you tell me?

If the wrong gear oil is used they get a very bad shudder. I would try changing to oil to one that is in spec - 75w 90.
I had
mine changed 3000km ago and the shudder has all but gone.
Cheers Kev

Thanks Kev, Wish it was that simple. Oils used were as specified by the big TOJO himself.

My troopy used to do the same. Strangely though, it went away after having the diesel gas fitted.
Read into that what you will....I suspect it must be a fuel issue.
Cheers

Same happens to me with a 1HZ (mostly if I don't change down a gear when I should have!), I think it's pretty normal. There was a thread about it on LCOOL recently- it just happens when they are loaded at low revs.

Seriously I don't know what you are all worried about...It is a built in mecanism to destract you from the lack of power in the 1HZ....lol
By the way dad had the same problem in his 04 GXL 105 1HZ, 2x genuine clutches in the 1st 20,000km prob still there, then he convinced them to put in an aftermarket clutch, problem gone has 110,000km and has towed a 3-3.5t van all it's life.
Cheers

Hi Al
forgotten all about
mine, same prob with original clutch
Replaced with Safari or exceddy HD and the issues faded from memory, until I saw your post.
Reason , the clutch plate has some springs internal to take the shock out of the rotational force, when you drop the clutch or bouncing over obstacles sending shocks through the driveline.
They get a little tired and as there is nothing to stop rebound, when the loading is just right they bounce,
A change in throttle and prob settles (more load keeps springs compressed, less and springs push back and settle)
Changed the clutch and I forgot the prob ever existed

Hi Al
I would agree that the clutch is the most likely suspect. But as always work from the easy and simple fixes to the harder ones. So - have you checked you uni joints on the tail shaft. I once had a shudder but it came from a dodgy uni joint. It was easy to tell as the shudder came through from the
seat of your pants not from the foot pedal or steering wheel.
