Is the Globalsat BU-353 GPS Waterproof ?

G'day all,
Just purchased a BU-353 USB GPS, and reading the manual it states;
(WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or shock hazard, do not expose this product to rain or moisture -}
This contradicts the advertising statement; (The BU-353 GPS Receiver can be utilized in a variety of applications that require magnetic mounting with a waterproof configuration.)

I want to mount the GPS on top of the snorkel where my previous Garmin antenna has operated for years

? Is it waterproof or not.

Cheers,
Barry

Barry,

I used mine on the bonnet in Tasmania for weeks in the rain and had no problems. If you purchased it from us and you mount it there and have a problem let me know and I will replace it.

Most web sites I looked at say they are waterproof (most USA)

"The BU-353 GPS Receiver can be utilized in a variety of applications that require a magnetic mounting with waterproof configuration. With non-slip on the bottom and the compact design, the BU-353 is completely self-contained and waterproof. It''s incorporating the latest SiRF Star III GPS chipset and an active patch antenna so you receive a high degree of GPS accuracy.

Combining both design and technology into an iF product design award 2006 winning GPS receiver the Globalsat BU-353 integrates the latest SiRFStarIII chipset into a stylish GPS mouse. This results in one of the most sensitive and accurate GPS receivers on the market today.

Typical application can include marine environments, aviation, commercial use such as fire truck, police cars and utility vehicles and buses. The extended 5 feet long cable allows for easy routing to your PC behind headliners and side panels and terminates to a custom USB connector for interfacing with one of the available cable kits that is purchased separately.

Feature:
SiRF Star III High Performance GPS chipset
High sensitivity (Tracking Sensitivity: -159 dBm)
Extremely fast TTFF (Time To First Fix) at low signal level
Support NMEA 0183 data protocol
Built-in SuperCap to reserve system data for rapid satellite acquisition
Built-in patch antenna.
Super-cohesive magnetic for mounting on the car
USB interface connection port.
Waterproof and non-slip on the bottom.
LED indicator for GPS fix or not fix.
WAAS ENGOS is supported."

BU-353

Regards

Richard

I have one it's only a backup and I have never used it in the rain.

If the top of your snorkel goes under you will have bigger issues than knowing where you are ;-)

They work perfectly well sitting on the front of the dash inside the car.

I've had one now for a couple of years and never had any weather problems with it when mounted on the roof. What I can say is it's a brilliant GPS, picking up good signals in the thickest of karri forest in SW WA, stuff that would send my old Garmin GPSII+ into apoplexy.
My only criticism is that the 1.5M USB lead is too short and one needs an extension. Why couldn't they have put a 3M lead on it from the start?

Thank's Guys.
I am sure it is weatherproof.
I will try not to venture into water above snorkel height !
