Durba Toilet on the C.S.R.

Is there anybody out there that has "used" the new toilet at Durba Springs in the past six weeks? The reason for asking this question is I would like to know if there is any "serious smell" coming from the said toilet when using it or was it a pleasant experience? As the "under side" of the toilet was my handy work I am curious to know if the toilet has a smell or not. So, if necessary I can put more development into it before we build anymore.

What type of set up is it??
Is it a composting longdrop??

At work we have been having issues with the composting longdrops with the smell. These are located at the Free camp at the Calliope River and also one in the Boyne Valley. The ones with a solar powered ventilation system seem to work better and smell quite good when compared to the ones with either no or wind driven ventilators.

Hi Kev & Darkie,
No, the toilet at Durba Springs is a simple "collect the rubbish" and trailer it away to be disposed of. I have tried the composting toilets but they cannot handle the "volume" that is being deposited. The air system is simply a whirley bird on the roof, but maybe I will have to go to a solar powered fan system. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is a similar type of ventilation system that we use on one of the composting toilets.

It is the Solar powered option with a wind ventilator back up

Check it out here

It was OK back in June not that I spent all that much time in there smelling the roses :-)

Seriously it was fine, I don't expect these things to be totally smell free but it was not bad compared to many others I have come across.

It maybe as simple as the trailer needs to be emptied??

I second that, it certainly is a bonus.

Maybe it was because it was very hot 35+ degrees when we were there, but it smelt so bad people were walking off into the scrub with shovels.
