Storing furniture while,Im travelling

Hi all ,
I have sort of touched base with this a long time ago and I'm thinking of storing my house contents on the property I'm renting for 9 months,the only problem is I have to clad the walls of my 8x6mtr carport with something so its all secure,the material only stays for the 9 months then it all comes back off so I'm looking at materials that are cheap like color bond or something ,I checked out the storage places and it is going to really strain our budget for the size we need,hence the reason for me doing this ,so what Im asking is for any ideas on material and keeping my stuff IE solid wooden table and pool table safe and dry,so has anyone ever done this before??

If you are going to rent the house I would buy a shipping container that is in good nick and use that. I am sure prospective Tenants would like the idea of a carport and wouldn't mind a shipping container in the yard.

If using a shipping container outside, you might need a roof or ventilation.
Talking to some others who have done the block, when they got back after a good few months some of the furniture in the container had been affected by heat. i.e. some veneer furniture had the veneer lifting.

I thought of that as well but it will not fit and storing it cost $$ as I don't have anyone's place to store it at and last but not least I have been quoted about $2500 to $3000 to buy one,hence the reason of closing up the carport ,I'm lucky as I live on a corner block and the carport does not effect the house its on its own and they still get the back yard with a huge timber pergola and a double garage so I don't think they will miss out too much. OK then try a place that sells seconds or secondhand stuff. You will need to make it fully sealed for both the weather and vermin.

It may possibly need additional posts put in to support the wall purlins.

Johny Boy - How much per month would it cost to put your gear in a small storage unit - here they are only $90 per month for a single garage size unit.

What about $90/mth storage plus $180/day for truck hire to shift your stuff to a cheaper storage location?

Sorry, not an offer. Was just suggesting that if you could find storage in Orange for $90/mth (as suggested by Member AJ), it would be worthwhile hiring a self-drive truck from Hertz/Budget/etc. to store your things where it would be cheaper.

Often storage in the cities is more expensive than storage in smaller towns because many people will pay a premium to have their stuff nearby where they can quickly access it - not an issue if you're gone for 9 months doing a "lap of the block" (was considering the same thing myself last year before heading o/seas for a while - storage in Cooma was cheaper than in Canberra).

Johny Boy, check insurance before you go too far . We found it impossible to get insurance when stored onsite in a similar situation.

We ooked at storade units in the south east of brisbane and they were about 300/mth... crazy.

We ended up buying a 20 foot container for 2200 delivered and water tight and were very lucky to have some friends with acreage to store it for us for a coulpe of years. We will probably be able to sell the container for as much as we paid when or if we return....

If you decide not to come back and go somewhere else, you can have all your stuff picked up and brought to you as you probably wont want to come back :)

That's the thing, you'll get your money back when you go to sell your container. But yeah, you need a mate or a family member with a rural property you can keep it on, as most metropolitan Councils get shirty about sea containers on residential land and the last thing you want to be dealing with when you're off on your trip of a lifetime is Council red tape and legal proceedings etc

Our entire household belongings are in storage as we are currently travelling oz....we are paying $204 per month with the storage king in our local area and that is for a shed as big as a double garage but much higher....and it is a new establishment so we have been pleased to pay that price to have all our stuff together and well looked after....we couldnt get our things insured though via our normal insurer but the storage facility does offer insurance to you as an option but the coverage had loads of clauses....

hey just going,
I also got a quote from them for a double garage size and they said that N.R.M.A will insure you if at there premises but my quote was closer to $500 per month so where are you located ,as I think I must just be in a expensive area and I wanted it from Jan to about Sept I don't know if that effects the price ?? thanks for the advice I might have to look into it again .

We have a large inside storage unit in Caboolture

It is 54 cubic metres and costs $1200 plus insurance supplied by them for 6 months.

Is in a brand new complex and hopefully secure as it looks.

We looked at storage when we started our trip but decided for the price they wanted we would be able to buy new furniture when we finished so we sold nearly everything we had. Personal stuff we sent to some friends to store for us. We had some friends who we sent stuff home to as we collected bits on our trip. Now we get the pleasure of going from store to store and sitting on real couches and dreaming about fridges that are bigger than an esky lol. Can't wait to watch a dvd on something bigger than my laptop. As soon as we find a house we will be shopping and doing some deals I hope.

Should have mentioned, buy some damp rid containers to put in with your furniture. They obsorb moisture from the air and help to stop mold or moisture damage. Buy them at Woolworths ect.

Friends of mine decided to leave some stuff in their house - in a sealed and locked area for a year while they were away. The tenants broke in and ransacked the lot. Did not find out until they got back and there was a second lot of tenants in there by then. All too late. The severely regretted it.

Another friend stored a lot of gear in a lockup only to find massive water penetration and then vermin nesting. Ruined lots of gear.

I fear you are in for a difficult decision.

A lot of people around me have rented their houses to their own adult children and gone off touring for ages. One neighbour has not been back for 4 years now and I think even his daughter has moved out. ( a friend moved in afterwards.)

I have considered your scenerio and believe I would sell off most of my furniture keeping only those few precious or very new things that would be too expensive to replace. Nice to come back and restock the house. I would then find a rental lockup - maybe even one in a country town not too far away (for the dryer environment). I would have the stuff sealed inside some sort of locked container within the lockup I am renting. And just be prepared to lose the lot anyway.

Sorry to sound a bit pessimestic but not a lot of choices unless you live in a retirement village where you can just shut the door and go for ages knowing your neighbours will look after it and the village gardeners will tend the lawns.
