Similar problem last year - on our way to the GCR had intended to pass thru Kal and
camp at
Niagara Dam, but we were held up for a considerable time due to a bad road accident, then my passenger was coming down with the lurgi so
camping in freezing temps was out. Would have stayed at
Kookynie hotel further north as Plan 'B', but didn't arrive at Kal till sundown, then found it was race week. Eventually got a motel room on a cancellation and it cost $155. Ouch!
Still, we were thankful we could get a warm bed for the night.
Didn't stick around for the nags....

Reminds me of this story on news.com the other day:
Boring, too expensive
I don't agree about the boring part, but I have noticed over time that Aussie tourism is pricing itself out of its own market. The high end (luxury) stuff is expensive; always has been, always will be. But why does everything else have to cost so much now?
Is it going too far to assume that one day every road out of every town and city will have toll booths on them, and the bush will be patrolled by a hybrid race of
parking inspectors fining people for not paying their
parking, looking, and sleeping tickets at the meters?
I think I exaggerated too much...

Rossco
Agree totally on stuff being overpriced, especially in WA.
We've just got back from just under 4 months on the road using a Shippshape on top of the Humvee for most of it with the occasional cabin or motel room mostly when staying in town for a few days or when it is wet and cold and unable to have a fire.
Cabin prices varied from $50 to $200 per night with the norm being around $75 - $85, the cheapest were in older style Jayco units and so where the dearest!! in Port Headland!!!
Camp sites varied from $5 p/n U/P to $43 p/n Powered, again Port Headland!!!
These prices were for two people, add in kids and it will cost you more for each one. The average price was around $17 for u/p and $29 p/n for powered sites.
They wonder why so many freecamp as much as possible.
Not hard to see using the above figures why a couple with two kids get better value at a high end resort or going o/s than touring and staying in parks albeit for a shorter period.
National Parks are also way too expensive often charging at least u/p rates ($17 -$20 p/n) with absolutely no facilities other than a long drop dunny.
