The Challenger has a max Tow Weight of 2279kg with a max Ball Weight of 227kg. A WDH must be used.
Check and see if a Cooler is already fitted and if not I would recommend one if towing in Hot Climates. Also suggest you tow in Top gear and not in Overdrive. Towing in Overdrive causes the Torque Converter to constantly lock and unlock. This can result in Transmission Failure. It also uses more fuel as the vehicle is constantly pulling hard whereas towing on Top gear the motor revs a little higher but does it easier without undue strain.

I have been towing a 5.5 metre poptop, about 1800kg loaded, with my 2003 V6 3 litre auto Challenger for the past four years. The Challenger has done 95000 km, about 40,000 km towing the van.
I think the auto is an advantage. I tow in top, (sometimes in OD if downhill or tail wind). Had a transmission cooler fitted for $160. 15-16 litres per 100 km when towing at around 90km. 17-20 litres at 100km. Touch wood I have had absolutely no problems at all. Would like to buy a new one when I need to get another tug, but appears the new model won't be sold here. A bit more power would be nice, but Challenger geared really well. I will probably eventually move to a diesel Triton.

Thanks everyone for the help, i am looking for a tow vehicle with good weight capacity and towing ability,that won't just get me from fuel pump to fuel pump.the ones i have looked at are holden rodeo,mitsubishi challenger,prado and pajero.it seems like the auto in most vehicles would benefit from transmission coolers from what i have read.

I would think most good 4wds already have a Tranny cooler.

Went to fit one to my cruiser when I got it and found it already has one factory fresh.

Check that your choice doesnt already have one before buying one to fit.
