Simpson Desert French Line Feedback

I crossed East to West on QAA and French line before later returning on part Rig Road. The average speed in the article of 35.85 k/h seems a bit higher than what the vehicles were doing when I crossed. Rare that I got over 30 on QAA/French and much of the time it was more like 20. Overtook no one and no one overtook me. Typical speeds seem to be a fair bit slower than 35 k. If planning to do this trip I would recommend expecting a slower crossing. Safe travelling.

I'll second that - did it three weeks ago with similar speed. Apparently the dunes are worse than average this year though. My first trip so I can't say.

Yes I agree Flynnie, 20kph is typical on QAA/French Line and even 15kph at times.

Cheers

A few years ago we were doing west-east and some of our group had a deadline (because they mismanaged thgeir time allocation) and so on the QAA we sped things up a bit to around 60kmh :-) Passed other vehicles and they weren't impressed. On other occasions we have just ambled along the tracks.

After 7 Simpson excursions and two offtrack treks north and south across the desert I have seen enough of that part of the country :-) Still, it is a good experience every time it is visited.

Guys,

If you recorded these tracks with a GPS then the best option is to load them into the system that way our computed averages can be updated based on the latest data received. Of course the other trick is the dunes change each year and this and the person doing the driving will effect the speeds.

The EO treks system utilises the GPS data records in Plotswap so if you think it needs updating please upload the gps files and the system will amend the data based on the latest most accurate plots in the system. We are currently developing the new mapping system to support this data update also and this will make the updates automatic a quick.

Have a good one.

PS: That record was done by me and I may drive a little faster than others and was recorded West to East - the system just auto reverses the data to give East to West if we do not have data specific to that direction of travel. This will make a difference also. So load it if you recorded it and we will take care of it.

I did not mean to start a new thread. Only a comment at bottom of the trek article.

Sorry I do not have GPS data to upload.

Flynnie,

It is no problem at all and the feedback system auto creates threads and links the article and the forum together to ensure that the article (trek) has recent comments and feedbacks linked.

As for the GPS data it is also no problem I commented as much for you as for anyone else that reads this thread so that everyone understands how the community input is used to create the sites core data. Maybe someone that reads this thread may have a plot file to contribute and that is the main reason for my response.

Have a good one.

Hi Flynnie

Interesting looking at logs , I note from our trip both ways 2 weeks ago that our average was 26 but this included stops , and was prety close to Davids average of 35 not including stops , never got over 60 except around the lakes of course.
We preferred to go a little faster on the approaches and roll to the actual dune tops, seems to make things go more easily.

When I did the return trip along the Rig Road as far as the Knolls track it was a lot better and faster and easier going. It also was a more interesting drive inmho.

With all the winds since who knows what it will be like next season.
