Hi all
I have a 3 Litre diesel 5L engine, and have recently noticed the engine seems annoyingly louder when the rev range is between 2200rpm and 2500 rpm. It doesn't seem to matter what gear, its noticeable both in 4th or 5th gear. The engine has around 100 000km on it.
Has anyone experienced this before, what could be causing it? Could it be valve clearance?
thanks

hi ad1
valves have a metalic rattle noise if in need off adjustment or
it could possibly be a burnt out manifold gasket or part there of
or a manifold to exhaust pipe flange gasket or turbo gasket???? one all /or /other as you have actually stated what type of sound it is i have made the 2 suggestions that are common things

Mine gets an annoying buzz at 2200 rpm and it is resonance in the snorkle/induction system, common with a snorkle on this engine.

Could also be fouled or dirty injectors which aren't delivering the super fine spray they are designed for , rather dribbling here and there. Small changes in injector performance have an outcome on engine audibal moises and perceived rough running vs smooth etc. Or ditto for the diesel injector pump, read this small
forum.

If it's a 5L ( or a 3L ) there is a pretty good chance it will be the big end brgs.
very common. You've done about the right K's too

Eh?
So at around 100,000k the 5L diesel hilux motor (3.0d) commonly does the big ends?
If this is the case (which I find hard to believe), then this would make the nissan zd30 look very good (no offence to 3.0l patrol owners, but it does have a lot of negative press), unlike the venerable 3.0d naturally aspirated slug...

sorry-but what a load of rubbish. While I had heard a long time back that 3L's drop bearings I am yet to come across one that is unexplained. Thats not to say its not possible.
Certainly be interested to know if any 3L (or 5L) owners have experienced a bigend failure not attributable to an obvious cause?
But if it was it wouldnt show up in the manner described.

These motors seem to have a resonance around this rpm.
Most noticed if there is a
snorkel fitted.
Is it belt noise, idler noise, or an engine noise from inside.
The shim buckets for valve clearance are still within the scope of doing it at home if you can do normal valve clearance.
Check where the noise is coming from when not driving, and let us know where its coming from.
When were the injectors last serviced? or do you use some toyota injector cleaner or simmilar etc?
cheers
