Just looking at the Outback version of the Jayco Flamingo ST camper trailer (the one which has the portaloo and shower). I know it's not been out long but any feedback on it would be appreciated. We're also looking at upgrading to independent suspension instead of the standard beam axle - has anybody done this and how did you find it?

Hi Minkybear

We have one with upgraded suspension. It tows really well just be aware they do have a heavy ball weight with 2 water tanks and 2 batteries and all your gear.
Mine comes in at 185kg loaded but I have air bags on the navara so not really a problem for me. Camper loaded weighs 1520kg loaded.

Hi Rossco
Thanks for that - is yours the Flamingo ST with the shower/loo. If so, how practical do you find it using the shower or do you mainly just use it if you are not on a site?

Yes has shower /loo. You can use it anywhere, tiolet has own holding cassette and shower drain comes out next to sink drain just hook on grey water pipe to van park or put a bucket under it. shower is a big plus.

Hi Rossco

Thanks for the info - we've now ordered our unit, with the independent suspension as an optional extra, and we should get it mid December, so can't wait to get it hooked up and take it out for it's first trip. Hubby is busy getting all the extra wiring done on the Navara for the electric brakes and split charging facility for the auxillary battery for the camper. Did yours come complete with the battery fitted or just the battery box, and if so what size Amp hour battery did you fit?

Sorry Minkybear just noticed your post.
Mine came with the charge wire and anderson plug to charge the aux batteries, but I fitted my own batteries...2x120amp AGM's. You must use a sealed battery as the are mounted under the front bench seat (no nasty gasses inside camper plus they can go bang). Just got back from 5 days away and didnt charge the batteries on the way home or while away and voltage was still 12.6volts, But we were using them sparingly.

We hired a flamingo(without ST) for 1 month & traveled 5000klm with it ..It performed fantastic, no issues (except a broken wingnut putting up the door). I think the shower would be a big plus & from the layout doesn't take up much room.
I'm actually looking to buy one but can't believe the long waiting list.. I would have thought they would have them built & ready to sell.

Good to hear that you had a good experience with the Flamingo and are considering purchasing one. There is a delay in purchasing, but as we went for a non standard simplicity axle we knew we would have to wait for ours to be built - still we should have it mid Dec as we recently signed off the plans for the factory to commence production, so cant wait to get it!!

We got ours at the june caravan and camping show this year and when we picked it up the sales guy said the had orders for 276 units just from that one show , they must do about 6 or 7 a year so thats not a bad turnover.
